[IMG] The language on the Boards is English but I wonder how many of us are not native speakers and have another language as their first language. So I thought it could be interesting to have a poll and see what languages (beside English) are the most represented.

I selected options based on the number of native speakers worldwide with an emphasis on European languages for the less spoken languages. If your language is not included it's because the number of options is limited to 50 which is already a lot but a bit short when you try to make a somewhat comprehensive list.

    Thanks for posting! :)

[IMG] Um, you haven't made this a poll by the look of it :bad:

Technically my first language is german, but I've never been to Germany or even left the UK. I also remember very little of it :(

Well it took me some time as I misread and we only have 30 options and not 50 so I had to put together a few languages (no offense to anyone) and leave a few out (Filipino and Malay which I wanted to include) so I guess there is even more of a bias toward European languages.

What I mean by first language is the first language you ever spoke. So if the first language you ever spoke was German you should choose that option. ;)

    Serbian here. :)

(I ticked off Serbo-Croatian, though technically, it no longer exists as a language and you'd have a hard time getting either the Serbs or the Croatians to say that's their language. The languages are very, very similar, but you know, Balkans :p Still, it gives you a spot more in the poll - good thinking :) )

This reminds me of the old joke...

Question: If a person who can speak three languages is called trilingual and a person who can speak two languages is called bilingual; what do you call a person who can only speak one language?

    Answer: American.

Good one T2Bruno, it reminded me of the way French speakers were called "keskidi" in the Old West because they couldn't speak English and used to say "qu'est-ce qu'il dit?" all the time meaning "what is he saying?" ;)

Truth be told I didn't plan on separating the two languages. I learned a few words when I was at university but I've forgotten them.

Am I the only French native speaker here? :D

    @Montresor: yummy!

@Montresor: You illustrated the question "Danish, isn't that something you eat?" nicely. :D

But like you, it's my first language too.

Interesting that Caradhras put it on the list. It's not exactly a major language.

I was going to select 'other' and type in 'American,' but I went with 'English' instead.

I'm a native English speaker. I studied German for years, but I probably haven't spoken a word of it in over a decade. So I can pretty accurately say:

Ich kann nicht Deutsche (sp?) sprechen.

Only 40.91% of native English speakers so far. That's interesting (and unexpected). Of course I'm not counting Splunge! :p

It's biased toward European languages and I knew that Danish would get a few votes. ;)

    Deutsch is the right spelling.

I really need to brush up my German, I can get by but I'm not good at it.

I speak American English, a small amount of Mexican (very different from Spanish), and an ample amount of Pig Latin... :D

I can understand UK English if it's repeated a few times and I have some time to figure out WTF they're *trying* to say. :p
