We had our first snowfall that was large enough to shovel last night - about 4 or 5 inches (10-12 cm). I'd say the timing of this is about average for our climate - we rarely see snow before December, and hardly ever after March. However, one thing that I have noticed is that it seems like we used to get much more snow when I was a kid. Is this just perception on my part (I was smaller, so did the snow appear bigger than it does now?) I was wondering if other people noticed the same thing. Also, when do you usually get your first snowfall in your area?

I'm sure the amount of snow varies from place to place and year to year. At least it does here. One year we might get no snow at all (though that's pretty rare), another year 50cm every few weeks. We've actually had more than 60cm of it a bit more than a week ago. Shovelling galore...

But luckily it's been raining nearly every day since, and it's pretty much washed all of it away by now. Only the big man-made piles are still there. Everything else is gone by now. Until it snows again...

In mid November or so. Sometimes the first snow hits as late as early December but usually in November. This is in south but the northern Finland is really not that much different. They just usually get their snow a few weeks before us. ;)

It hasn't snowed in Auckland in living memory (if ever). Plus it is almost the middle of summer.

We had first snow (but very little of it) about 2 weeks ago. Then it melted. And 4 days ago lots of it. Again it melted. And it will snow->melt few more times I think.

I live in Alberta Canada. Snow usually comes around the end of October and stays until around mid March. We were kind of lucky and did without it until late November this year. There was a lot more snow in the winters when I was growing up as well. I think the reason there hasn't been as much snow in the last decade is drought. We are just starting to recover from a very dry set of years.

We've got our third or fourth snow storm here today...and it's a big one too. :bang:

Anyone want to trade some snow for a warm and sunny beach? :p :rolling:

I have already had the snowblower out for six inches twice. the first was about ten days ago. We live right off the end of Lake Ontario and we get alot of localized snow. I can remember years when it snowed on Halloween.

WOW - every 5th year or so, in the middle of July we might get 2 inches of snow on our tallest mounain for about 1/2 a day.
Having said that we once got a single clump (~60cm diameter, ~10cm deep) just outside our pagola - but that was pretty strange.

I'm sure it snows every couple of days in Hollywood, no matter what time of year it is, indoors . . . .

It's snowed twice here in my lifetime--both times for a mere five minutes or so, and both times the snow melted immediately upon hitting the ground.

Aldeth, I live near you so I caught the upper edge of the same storm - we got only about 3 inches, but there was an inch already on the ground from Sunday night's little blast. Fun!

I sort of remember what you're talking about, but I can take the trend farther back. :geezer: I remember lots of snow when I was tiny, then a period where we got very little snow, and now we seem to be back in a snowy cycle. Weather is like that, cyclical like everything else.

EDIT: The "geezer" smiley should be :splunge: :D

It has snowed, and now it rains. There is definetly a difference between now and the time when I was a kid. Then, the snow came much earlier and it stayed much longer. The latest few years, there has only been snow for a few weeks in a row at most, and then it has melted. Then it rains and after that the cykle repeats itself.

Well this week we've been in the -17 range, but it looks like in the near future the temp is going up to the 0 range again. I guess it is possible to be snowless again before christmas.

About ten years ago, we had snow up to three to four feet deep. Since then, we have never had anything more than a few inches, less and less in the past few years.

The good firewood sales might also have something to do with the price of gas these days.

Bah! You youngsters don’t know what snow is! I’ve lived in southern Manitoba (Canada) all my life. ‘Course, back in the day, we had real snow, not the light dusting you wimps like to call “blizzards" these days. Started snowing mid-August, and didn't melt until the following July. And we couldn’t afford snow shovels, let alone snowblowers – had to clear the sidewalk with Mom’s wooden spoon, which sometimes proved difficult if she was beating us with it at the time.

    Ah, the memories. :geezer:
