Well this is probably about my 80th time being forced to watch what what supposed to be a meaningful scene where we all found out what became of Khalid. Try as I might, I can find no further closure on this death of an important character. I can't help but scream to myself, why didn't the game developers do more with this story.

"Oh, we found Khalid dead on the table in the 2nd dungeon. I guess that's it."

No. To hell with that. The story line was already written in the words of the characters. We could have resurrected Khalid, or he could have come back as some kind of puppet for an archvillian such as Irenicus, whereby Imoen, Minsc, and Jaheira leave your party rather than fight him. Or the only way to keep Jaheira in your party is if you completed the romance. What the hell.... That would have been awesome. Or have him come back as the proper archvillian that he should be. The archvillian of the game. Wouldn't that make some people crap their pants? If we were all puppets under the strings of someone like Khalid, who hid his evil intentions and true power from us for so long? The Harpers would be enraged.

Wouldn't it be brilliant if your party just fell apart at the end of the game? To have Jaheira automatically turn against you and to have Minsc and Imoen have dialogue scenes to force you to choose between them leaving or fighting the battle to the finish? And if you left party members like Imoen and Minsc behind, couldn't they end up fighting against you somehow at the end?

"Minsc refuses to be left behind. I would never think that your butt would be the one which needed kicking. Butt kicked it shall be!"

"Hey. Have you forgotten about me? Have I annoyed you so terribly throughout this entire series that you felt the need to kick me from your party? Have I?" *changes into some kind of scorpion brain eating monster with a beholder eye and the power of an archlich* "Have I?"

    Disclaimer : bountiful spoilers ahead

It could have been worse, in the novels Khalid has even less of a role - dying in the Nashkell mines after being turned into a undead.
I'm going to assume the reason Khalid was cut was because even though the games don't adhere to it too much, the developers wanted to give the player to follow the canon story line or at least include parts of it, like the one where the PC develops a relationship with Jaheira - though to be fair, this happens far before the Irenicus situation in the novels (in fact, Jaheira is captured together with Imoen & Irenicus by the cowled wizards in the novels and during this time the main character cheats on her with Bodhi.)
