    [IMG] I have been surprised by the lack of a thread concerning the German elections. Last I read a conservative was the top vote getter, but didn't have enough seats to control the government. Has this been resolved yet? If Germany goes conservative what are the ramifications? Or will Germany be paralyzed (very similar to the way the U.S. is) because of the lack of a clear mandate and the polarization of the people?

    I have been surprised by the desinterest too.

    Angela "Angie" Merkel gets to be the federal chancellor and will be worrying about the fragility of a great coalition for the next few months. At least it seems to be that way right now.

    Germany goes conservative -> ramification.

    No ramifications at all. Left, right, what's the difference anyway ? All parties have become the one and the same and are completely interchangable. As American, you should be painfully aware of that. There is nothing that's going to change.

    And that's why the German elections haven't been that newsworthy. The newsworthy part was that nothing is going to change and there is no willingness to change. Because change would mean... ahm... change. And there won't be no change.

    The actual and factual and really mattering differences between the conservatives and the socialists are, like in most countries or the western world today, not existing.

    And there's the slight problem of the ability to act . Prevailing opinion among commentators, at least so far as my ability to discern was able to discern the content of their writings, is, that only a minimal, miniscule, midget part of 10% of all political questions can actually be influenced by the government. Everything else stays in Germany as it is.

    So... outcome... who cares?

    I don't think that Germany will go very much to the conservative side. The financial and foreign ministers will still be social democrats so it looks that SDP got a pretty good deal in exchange for the chancellor's seat. The danger of this grand coalition is that neither of the parties are exactly eager to work with the other, so both parties will be unable to make much needed but more or less unpopular reforms.
