[IMG] I've never used a mod before, and after taking a 2 year break from BG2, I'm ready to play again, but with mods this time around. I've downloaded the following mods and would like some opinions on how to install them, whether they are buggy or are any good or if they will clash with one another.

A couple of questions 1st: which is better, cross mod banter packs or banter packs? and how do i install npc mods in .rar format? i downloaded winace to extract it, but when i try to open it, it says i have to open it in my infinity engine game directory.. how do i do that? The mods in question are:
    tsujatha
    yasraena
    ajoc's minimod
    potion quest

    help!!

The mods that installed properly were:
    quest pack
    banter pack
    g3 anniversary mod
(this is because they were all self-extracting, thank you Gibberlings3!)

To all my knowlege you need winRAR to open those (unfortunately unknown) *.rar files, get it at rarlabs.
There usually is a readme which should help you from there.

    Hey Enagonios,

The Banter Packs add extra banters to the NPCs in BG2; the Crossmod Banter Pack adds banters between NPCs from mods. You can install both without conflicts. I also don't know of any conflicts between the mods you want to install, though I would check the readmes of each one to be sure.

For the mods that come in rar format, you need to extract them into your BG2 folder using a program like WinRAR (check rarlabs.com). Each one should have (using Tsujatha as an example) a folder named Tsujatha, a fie named Setup-Tsujatha.exe, and setup-Tsujatha.tp2. To install the mod once extracted, double-click Setup-Tsujatha.exe and follow the instructions on-screen.

I haven't played Neh'taniel so I'm not sure. He was originally released as a beta that they downgraded to an alpha, so I'm not sure he's actually stable and bug-free yet. SimDing0 is also working on a grip of bug fixes for Quest Pack so you may want to hold off a bit for the next version.

For mod recommendations... wow, that's a whole forum to itself as everyone likes different things. ;) For me personally, I'll usually run with a standard load of stuff to make the engine less annoying and correct some errors--G3 Tweaks, Oversight, Ease of Use, Ding0's Tweaks--some stuff that adds content and dialogue--Banter Packs, Unfinished Business, G3A, Flirt Packs--and then whatever other mods look interesting. I know Virtue is something that I have not played yet but looks very interesting. I would also highly recommend Cleric Remix once we iron out our own bugs and move it off beta status. :)

I'd largely agree with CamDawg. :)

The one thing I would strongly suggest, as Cam mentioned, is the use of a tweak pack. Although not adding new content, components like higher ammo stacks make the game play a lot better.

Cam didn't mention any NPC mods - the best of those which I've tried is Kelsey, available from http://www.pocketplane.net so I'd give that a shot.

On a side note, with Tutu installed, how do I get the Cleric Kit for 'Shar' to be applied to Viconia? When I use Shadowkeeper it isn't on the list, so I would need the special little code to fill in.

It isn't very clear in the readme, I'm sorry. Viconia should be kitted in Tutu as well, but you need to install Cleric Remix after you run the Tutu conversion so it can detect her Tutu files and kit her accordingly. Same deal with Branwen and her Battleguard kit.

I wouldn't recommend use of Shadowkeeper on a heavily modded game - lots of things can go awry accidentally. In particular I know it has problems with custom kits.
