Don't know. Maybe a fighter/thief/mage so you can dispel protections etc. (otherwise you can never kill mages) find and diabl;e traps, unlock and also do damage (but not wear armor, so you can never get lower then AC -5 and you have to make an excellent roll. Or maybe a paladin, but I think it's just too hard.
I'm thinking about playing the game with 2 persons: fighter/cleric or paladin and Imoen.... thief-mage and fight/healing skills.

I've been thinking about going solo, and agree with Head-Banger. You definitely want to be at least a Thief-Mage.

My suggestion (and this is what I'm going to do) . . . begin as a Thief with the Swashbuckler Kit (that way you get a Fighter's THACO).

Then Dual him to Mage. Once he gets past your Thief's level in mage, both ability sets will kick in.

This way you'll be able to use some good longswords or short swords, pack a whollop with lightning bolts, and be able to get past lock doors and traps.

    Indeed a good idea.

    You need at least:

    Thief-skills
    Mage-Skills
    Fight-skills

Maybe you can use a Kensai, does very much damage.... and can't wear armor just like a mage....

I'm playing a halfelf fighter/mage/thief solo. the only cheat I use is the exp cap remover to get higher than allowed in the offical Bg 2 rules. I'm playing at the normal rules difficulty.

Profiencies: ** flail ** war hammer *single weapon stile ** long bow.
str: 18/00, dex: 18, const: 18, wis: 12, int: 17, cha: 3 (pff, rolled long for that)

    Currently equiped with:
    Flail of the ages +3
Heartseaker +3 long bow (switched with staff of the Magi)
    Robe of fireprotection
    Amulet of power
    Ring of protection +2
    Ring of regeneration
    Boots of speed
    Cloak of the Sewers
    Helm of Vhailor
    Bracers ac 3
Girdle of Hill giant Strenght (19)

    Saving throws: 4/3/3/4/4
    Hit points: 101
    Current Thaco: 2
    Fighter/Mage/Thief lvl: 11/12/14
Alignment: Neutral Evil (but I went the Aron Linvail way)

I'm halfway the chapter 2 quests and even liches are no problem anymore for her even now. But you have to use EVERY skill to stay alive. I even used the larloch minor drains from my evil innate abilties to blast them from nearly dead to death :D The things that helped me most are the traps and the stone skin spell. The mayor lifesafer is the helm of vhailor from the expansion CD, which allows you to cast simulacrum. I also summon a lot and use the horn of valhalla for the berserk warrior. I empty every wand and potion that I find. I killed Shangalar and his cronies with traps and simulacrum, so I have the staff of the magi and it's lvl 9 spell Spell Trap to absorb spells in Hefty situations

I don't use plate armor, because I can't cast spells with it on. Instead I use the magic armors you can cast from your spell book. And of course I rest a lot to refresh protection spells. My ac is around -9 / -11 for most of the times, without any shield equiped and most protective spells on.

Btw, I hope I can survive the following chapters, I find myself reloading a lot lately, because the game is over if you get charmed, dominated, mazed or whatever, because you are alone :( I post in this thread if I survive it any further.

Untill now I have great fun and can't wait untill I find the bag of holding, I have to leave a lot of expensive stuff behind in favour of potions.....

I kept the description short, but if you have any questions, post them :D

Duh... because even a Berserker can't hit a mage with Improved Mantle, protection from magic weapons, Stoneskin, Globe of Invulnerabillty.......

Another problems seems to me not only the enemies (wait till you got a dragon to fight) but also to carry the stuff..... When you kill a group of 5 enemies with good stuff (like in the temple-district-sewers) how would you take al the items with ya? :)

[IMG] I wondered about that (carying stuff on a solo trip). Does it still count as solo if you bring Minsc and Anomen and so forth and have them act as non-combat caddies?

As a matter of fact, I just killed firkraag solo. Simulacrum, 6 normal traps, Spell trap from the staff of the Magi on us and Voila, dead Red Dragon in three tries... they gotta make him much more difficult to do, and with him all the dragons. they are supposed to be the hardest in the game!! Naja, another 6000 gold for Carsomyr, I'm not a paladin anyway ;)

To answer the question about all the stuff you can't take with you... you have to choose what to pick up. All you need is the stuff you use for ONE char (and not six) and the money from selling what you don't use, so you can buy better stuff. I know it's gonna hurt to not pick up all that cool stuff, but remember: YOU DON'T NEED IT! Choose the expensive stuff to sell: like full plate mails +1, +3 weapons and the likes. And your problem is solved once you find the bag of holding in the asylum. I heard up to 99 items fit in it :D

My solo tour is still going fine. I bought Robe of Vecna for casting speed and upped all three classes with another level. I'm past the original exp cap now, and this char is beginning to shine now. The boots of speed also seem to add an extra attack per round, so killing melee is going better with every level gained. Added another profiency in single weapon stile, every AC point counts. With all spells and equipment I get -12 AC now, without a shield. I'm beginning to get more positif for the future now ;) More news follows.

Without doubt a solo game has to be a F/M/T. But it is still cheating - XCap removing is THE biggest cheat. If you did that with no XP cap removing and on INSANE dificulty, that would be awesome.

Myself I am now running a game of 2 persons: Swashbuckler/Mage and Ranger/Cleric. No xcap removing, no cheats, no exploits, INSANE difficulty. I still consider it not entirely legit, because it is a multuplayer game. I might try to take Imoen instead - she will be much weaker, but it will be a good challenge.

Mmm, how do you keep the fun in the game when you reached the exp cap in chapter 3? no char improvement anymore, all that exp going to waste....I could not stand that for the forthcoming days of playing, do you?

[IMG] I am about to finish BG2 as a dc Fighter-9/Mage-17. This is a fairly easy character to solo with.

You do not need a thief to get through the game. You can use Knock to open locks if you want and any traps you can either avoid, protect against the damage or just take the damage head on.

Removing the XP-cap may be fun for some, but it is cheating since you are changing the rules. As always, if you find it more enjoyable then do it.
Keep in mind when discussing about soloing that your 6,000,000+ xp character may ;) have had an easier time finishing the game than a 2,950,000 xp character.

You're all right about it, and I was wrong....

After playing this char for a few days, I discovered he became so powerfull beyond funny playing.

Her ac is around -15 now, the saving throws are all negatives, thaco with flail of the ages is exactly 0 and I can reach seventh level spells and most of the thief skills are 100........

Soloing is easy with this char after the first few quests and the first 3.000.000 exp points. And after you picked up nice equipment available in chapter 2/3, you're unstopable. (read: shield with mind shield, staff of the magi, red dragon plate, ring of gaxx)

It's not fun anymore to play her, she cuts like a hot knife through butter. I'm going to play Torment again, like stated in another post :D

Problem is, When you play a fighter/thief/mage you can't wear a plate for it disabel the magespells so in that case you should wear a robe of good archmagi or something and gauntlets of defence????

[IMG] Here are the basic tactics I use with my dc F/M:

    * Spoilers *
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .

--- Keep summoned monsters around to draw attention away from yourself and cause some damage.

    Early on I use mostly:
    - Horn of Valhalla (from Bridge District)
    - Spider Figurine (from Spider Queen in Graveyard district)

    Spells I use are:
    - Spider Spawn (level 4), very early in the game when I can't summon anything better.
    - Animate Dead (level 5), truly excellent when you reach 15th level!
    - Mordenkainen's Sword (level 7).

Mind affecting spells are the cause of many problems so I do the Trademeet quests to get the Shield of Harmony which helps alot. (Note that a Kensai isn't helped by this since he can't use shields.)

Aran Linvail gives you an excellent amulet which protects against level drains, so vampires will not be too deadly. Watch out for the Domination spells the vamps use...

    --- Fighting Liches:
Time Stop does not have to be that bad.
Keep a summoned monster between yourself and the lich and he will bombard your monster with spells during the Time Stop. Use missile fire (Melf's Minute Meteors is good)if you can while your monsters pound on the lich. You can join in the melee after the first rounds.
Summoned monsters is also my preferred way of handling the Twisted Rune gang.

Kangaxx/Kangaxx the demi-lich is trickier because of the incredible resistance to damage and Imprisonment spell at will.
I use Spell Immunity (against Abjuration) to counter the Imprisonment.
Another option is to use one of the Protection against Magic scrolls you can buy at Adventurer's Mart.
Actually inflicting more damage then the demi-lich regenerates can be hard, so again Melf's Minute Meteors is recommended. Casting Simulacrum is good too. :)

--- Here are some spells I always memorize:
    1: Magic Missile
    2: Blur, Resist Fear
    3: Melf's Minute Meteors
    4: Stone Skin
    5: Animate Dead, Sunfire
6: Death Fog (to get rid of summoned monsters)
    7: Mordenkainen's Sword
    8: Simulacrum

My solo Ranger/Cleric is now lvl 8/13 and just completed Umar Hills and Trademeet. I left the Dragon for later when I get some 7th level spells and will gate in a couple of fiends
