THe graphic card is very essential in improving your ingame fps (frames per second) and then decrease lagging and make the game run smoother on high resolutions. Better cards also makes you able to play in OpenGL or Direct3D and that makes 3D games or effects appear much better than running in software mode.

the modern videocards enable 3d graphics, without a videocard or with some older videocards, you can't play OpenGl 3D grpahics. And of course, a videcard has also memory wich is used for the graphics so games go smoother and the graphics look much better.

[IMG] Installing a video card is not a big deal. If you have even put in any hardware into your computer it's not hard. You just snap the card into place and install the software. Follow normal step when installing anything in your PC, i.e. turn it off and bleed off static.
www.pricewatch.com has a list of prices for all type of video cards. The type depends on your motherboard and wallet. A newer computer will have a AGP slot in the motherbaord for a video card the older ones run in a PCI slot. To run today's games with 3D graphics you want at least 16MB of memory on the card but I'd suggest 32 or 64. For example BG2 required 8MB of video but didn't run smooth in 3D with less than 32.

Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'd be glad to help.
