When I hit the space bar, my two side graphic bars and the bottom graphic bar disappear. What have I done to cause this and how do I remedy it?

Something has altered the key mappings. Normally the "H" key does this, something has remapped it to the space bar. Either way hitting the same key should toggle it back.
I don't recall what the option is called, but it is under the options under key mappings or key bindings.

You're welcome. I recall the first time I panicked when I hit that feature by accident, probably the first time I played the game because I decided to jump right in without RTFM. I couldn't figure out how to get them back either until I delved into the options and found something about hiding the interface in the key mappings.

Incidentally, you might want to look at the key bindings options, as it can tell you about a lot of shortcuts and features that can make gameplay much easier. It is far from cheating, they are built-in features intended to be used, just not shown on the GUI.
Another one you wouldn't know without reading the manual is that when you select all characters, you can right-click on the various formations shown at the bottom of the screen to get more options and re-assign the buttons.

I just realized that I know nothing about key mapping or key binding. But thanks anyway! And is it possible to make the two side graphic bars and the one on the bottom larger? At 73 years old, they are hard to read for me.

Technically no, but there is a way.
Put the game into 640x480 mode instead of 800x600 and it will make the side bars seem larger at the expense of a smaller window to the world. Note that this might not be possible if you are playing under Vista or later. Keep in mind the game was released with Windows 95 players in mind.

As for key bindings, you can explore them in the configuration program, or buried in the options in game. The term "key mappings" or "key bindings" are synonyms and sometimes they use the word "character" instead of "key". Different games use different words.

Another inquiry. Can I install my old original version of BG2 in addition to the BG2 EE I already have installed? Reason? The graphics are noticeably larger in all phases of the game. Is there any reason the old version will not run properly on my Windows 10 desktop?

Which graphics are you referring to? You do know that you can zoom in and out in the EE game area?

If you're referring to the interface graphics, then they'll always appear smaller on larger resolutions. So if you lower your screen resolution, the EE interface graphics will appear larger.

I think he means the interface icons. I'm not familiar with EE, but if he's using that mod that lets you use higher resolutions in the original, he should try turning it off and try the game in the original resolution. Most Vista and later systems will not let you select anything below 800x600, but that should be low enough, even though the aspect ratio might be skewed on a widescreen monitor.

Since the interface graphics will scale on EE too and he's got that already it'd be simpler and better to stay with that since it's got wide-screen support...

Go into the graphics option and make sure the "Scale user interface" is selected. That may be the problem your having. It was for me. Not sure if that's the problem your looking at or not but I'm clueless otherwise :p Just a thought.

Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah! Scaling the user interface worked beautifully on the BG2EE edition! Thanks again!
