I remember that Aldeth remarked that it was terrible that no artist or writer made the top 25. (I also remember that Dr. Phil McGraw was on the list, but Herman Melville was not.) I can understand artwork, as Michelangelo's David or the Mona Lisa are very well recognized, but not too many recognize American artwork - American Gothic is the only one that comes to my mind. However, I cannot understand the literature, as for Americans, The Grapes of Wrath or Moby Dick must be as well-known as War and Peace or Dickens.

Is there a certain artist or writer from the US that comes to anyone's mind, so that we can at least acknowledge them here?

For me, Hawthorne, Fitzgerald, Twain, and John Gardner all come to mind, but I am not familiar enough with American artists. The last writer is somewhat modern, and just a personal favorite. (But read Gardner's Grendel if you have the time!)

Yes, Beowulf told from the monster's point of view. Other good books by Gardner: Freddy's Book, October Light and Nickel Mountain.

But Ben Franklin is considered one of the best American writers, particularly the 18th century.

Now that you mention it, I'm surprised that Mark Twain was not included on that list. Ernest Hemmingway should have got some support from the Redneck crowd, shouldn't he?

H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe are surely some of the best writers.

Agreed. The Cask of Amontillado inspired me for a Ravenloft adventure, unfortunately, I couldn't keep a group together long enough to get to that one...

Jack Kerouac is the first to spring to mind, really. But I didn't like On the Roadall that much.

[IMG] Andrew Wyeth and the Wyeth Family are at least regionally famous artists in the Delaware/Pennsylvania area. Here's a few of his better known paintings.

Not DaVinci or Raphael...But not too shabby!
