I went to Firewine bridge because some NPC in some tavern said it was much treasure there. Going through the labyrinth beneath the bridge I finally met an ogre mage and his friends, who said he had been pestering the halfling town. After killing him I went through a hidden door, killed an evil halfling, and ended up in Gullykin. None of the halflings I meet mentioned anything about having trouble with the ogre mage, and none thanked me for killing him. Should I have gone to Gullykin before entering Firewine labyrinth? Was this ogre mage supposed to have been some kind of quest for the halflings? Or didn't they know he was there?

One of the halflings mentioned something about a tower - am I supposed to find a tower nearby too? (Can't find anything on the map... )

Hmm, maybe since you killed him before talking to the mayor the quest never started. Normally, if you got to Gullykin first the mayor will ask you to clear out the firewine ruins and give you a way to get into them. All you have to do is go down that tunnel and kill the orge mage. As for as I know, you don't even have to kill the mage, but I always do. The only reason to go down any further(God forbid) is to do the fallen knights quest. He only gives you 500 gp or so IIRC anyway though, maybe not even any experience.

As for the tower, he said Durlag's Tower, correct? That area is added in TotSC if you have it. It's right near gullykin so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

The Firewine Ruins are a real pain in the ass to go through. Your characters will run around everywhere because there's not too much space, and kobold commandos will be summoned as soon as you turn your back on a room. There's no harm in skipping this dungeon.

Yes, I think he called it Durlag's tower, but I haven't installed TotSC, and it doesn't appear on my map. But why in the world should an NPC in the original game talk about a place you can only reach in an expantion pack? That doesn't make sense!

If I buy and install TotSC, will the tower then appear on my map, or do I have to do the halfling town over again to get the reference from the NPC? I thought I was supposed to finish BG before installing TotSC....

I would guess that the reference to Durlag's Tower in BG prompted the developers to actually create it in TotSC.

You can install TotSC at any time, you don't have to wait until you finish BG, and yes, Durlag's Tower will appear on your map. There are also others who will talk about it inside TotSC.
