29 jan is your chinese lunar new year. As you might know this is the year of dog. A common greeting in chinese lunar new year is "gong xi fa cai" or "gong hei fat choi". It does not, however, mean happy new year. Word by word, it is "congratulate growing fortune". A "happy new year" greeting would be "xin chun ru yi" (new spring according to your wishes).

New year eve is called "chu xi" (getting rid of past/old), similiar to your spring cleaning. It is this night where family members, no matter how far, is possible, get together to have dinner on the same round table.

If you have china town in your region or chinese heritage friends, this is a good time to visit them. Elders or married people will give red packets to youngers or unmarried people. Inside red packets, you will find money or cheap lottery ticket if the giver is me. The money inside is always in even except 4. Four sounds like death in chinese. Even amount is used because even numbers are not lonely or single-ish, they are even.

If you are in Malaysia or Singapore, where muslims mixes with chinese, sometimes you will celebrate two festivals together. If one continues after another, you might even get 4 days of public, national, federal holidays, 4 full days!

Also Korean new year in lunar calendar (guessing it's from Chinese tradition). Anyway "se he bok bat-u-se-yo" (dashes for conveniance for pronoucing...well if you can)...which means about same as "congratuate growing fortunes."

We had heavy rain yesterday which, I'm guessing, made the new year celebrations not as festive. But it didn't stop us from visiting all our relatives and exchanging lucky money, good blessings and, of course, traditional food!
