When I saw the thread title, I thought I had mixed up the months or something. :)

If it is today then it's just luck that I posted this on the right day. I know it's around about now but I'm not exactly sure when

Holidays are more about the attitude and emotion than the actual date. The date is bit fuzzy anyway and there should always be a slow build-up and slow easing back off the celebration. For example; I'm just now finishing the easing off from Mardi Gras and will be starting my build-up to Cinco de Mayo in the next few days. The build-up and easing off are more an emotional thing -- alcohol consumption should remain constant with the occasional peak (especially on the specific date ... and the couple of days before and after).

April 23 is the day if you are in England. St George, the Dragonslayer, is the patron saint of numerous countries, and that might be the confusion. But April 23 is the day in England. It is also believed to be Shakespeare's Birthday. Shakespeare also died on April 23.

April 23rd is when most countries observe St. George's day - it's generally accepted to be the date of his death in AD 303. Portugal and Cyprus are two other countries who have St. George as a patron saint (iirc). He wasn't English in any way shape or form (by modern geography, his country of origin would be most likely Palestine), and I don't think he even visited our sceptered isle. But I'll put a beer in the fridge anyway. It's a good enough excuse.

The difference is most likely due to what calendars one uses to mark the holidays. Most Orthodox countries use the Julianic calendar rather than the Gregorian one, so the dates differ like they do for Easter and Christmas. Anyway, happy name day to all the Georges, Georginas, etc :) .
