[IMG] To Tals piece on the LotR review. Yes, it starts slow. It's meant to. Yes, there are bits that some will find boring (eg Tom Bombadil).
There is a solution for quick fix addicts. Read vol 2 FIRST (the Two Towers) Bang! you are right into the action. By the time you've read that you will be hopelessly addicted and wanting to know a) What happens next? and b) How did they get there and why?
I fear that 20 channels of rubbish TV punctuated by adverts is breeding a generation with the attention span of a goldfish. If the Film induces more people to buy and try the books that will be a good thing. In the UK, LotR was voted Best book of the 20th century, not just best fantasy book.

It's nice to get "the best" title.

But I must say that IMHO LOTR can't be voted as "the best". It can be - IT IS - one of the best books in 20th century.

It is crapthing to say something is "the best" in the century. In that much time surely many things were ones of the best.
If something is "the best" then it means all other things are irrelevant. I don't accept some books to be lower than the best "of the century". For example, "Celestine Prophecy".

[IMG] Extremist, do they have soccer in your country, with leagues? Every year one team is the best, another team is second, another 3rd. Doesn't mean they are rubbish, just not the best.
The vote was a nationwide vote of bookreaders, not my opinion. To be voted No 1 means it must have touched a lot of people.
BTW, I dont recall Celestine Prophecy in the top 100.

Soccer in my country? Yes. But I don't watch it, it is boring to me. Not only soccer, but all sports.

You know what am I talking about. It doesn't matter if a book I named is in Top 100. I just wanted to say that it is not right to place ONE above everything.
You could say it was the best selling book. But you know that the best selling book is Bible.
Hmm, I don't know how to say it all better. You got my point anyway.

I'm glad you agree about LOTR. I got a lot of replies by mail regarding my little piece of writing and everyone agreed with me wholeheartedly. I'll put the whole thing on in the Articles subsection when it goes off the front page so that people who missed it will be able to read it too.

The second book is the most boring one. The first one has the Nazgûls and Moria, and the third one has Minas Tirith and Mordor. The second isn't that much fun. It's just a delay of the third one, but still you can't just skip it.

I'd say that none of the books are boring. I'd even go as far as to say that no part of the series is boring, save perhaps "Concerning Hobbits" in the prologue.

The Two Towers is definately not boring. In fact, I think that this one is better than the other two books in the trilogy (though only a little).

Also, I don't think that it's the specific parts of the books (Moria, Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith...) that make them good, but rather the plot as a whole, colourful descriptions, and general atmosphere. Not even the incident in Moria would be very much without these things.

I would have to say that "the Lineage of the Numenorean Kings" and all similar appendices are more boring than "concering hobbits" - I just couldn't be bothered working through them.

Well, it's just that I don't have any appendixes in my rather old copy...

I\m lucky if I manage to see it in the theatre, because group home allowances do not movi tickets pay. And the GH movie trips_

Urggh! Last time we watched Harry Poitter.... Glaah.
