[IMG] I just bought Icewind Dale and don't understand some stuff. Wondering quickest way to replenish life before one of your party dies. Also, how do you quickly cast a spell? Right now I am clicking feverishly on each party memeber to see which character's spell i can use. I guess my real question is: Can I set HOTKEYS up for different spells and potions (like in diablo II spells and skills are either rt click/l-click or Function Keys that you set) I know there is an easier way to cast spells then the way I am doing it. Hopefully you can help.

The quickest way to replenish life is to use the Cure wounds priest spells (usable by cleric and druid). Other than the two I mentioned, only the mage can cast spell, but not the same spells as the cleric and druid. The mage also has to learn his magic from scrolls you find.

You can't cast unlimited number of spells (only the ones you memorize each day), and you can't do it very fast as in Diablo 2. You can set up hotkeys in the config.

As Mollusken said, use clerical spells for healing, or healing potions in the quick slots for "on the fly - heat of battle" sort of thing.

Thing is, use your space bar, take your time, select spell, select recipient, unpause. Pause is your best friend in this game.

Remember to select spells for memorisation though, coz only rest will replenish them each day. No mana potions I'm afraid.

ddconan: IwD isn't quite Diablo 2. You can make it something close, but in the end, clicking the mouse button quicker won't kill anything faster. Gawd knows it does in Diablo 2, especially the Boss battles.

Anyway, yeah. The 'Space Bar' is your tool of choice in this game. One hand on the mouse, and the other on the space bar. You can setup hot keys by running the IwD config program. If you have rearranged your start menu, you might have moved/deleted it. You can run it in the IwD install directory, manually.

If the game is running too fast for you (even with the space bar), you can do a couple of things. One, turn down the number of 'AI updates per second' in the config program. It defaults to 30, and I play at 60, but starting out you might try 24 or even 20. Two, you can setup the 'auto-pause' in the game itself. Under options, feedback (I think). There's a hole slew of them...end of round pause...after casting a spell pause...character hit...character injured...character whacked/dead. Crank them all on, and after a couple of hours playtime, you'll start to keep up with what you need to in battle.

So, to finally answer your *real* question: Druids, Clerics, Heal potions. Try to use your spells first, because 8 hours beauty rest will restore them. Potions are a last resort, because it costs cash (for the first couple of chapters, anyway) to buy them. Cash will become a moot point later on, but you'll need a bunch of potions for a couple of 'Boss battles'.

If the game is frustrating you, there *are* character editors available. No reason to hate the game just because it's frustrating you.
