[IMG] I am creating a compilation album with folk songs (mostly Irish) covered by rock and metal bands, but I would be interested in proficient covers by any type of band, regardless of genre.

    So far I have:

'Whiskey in the jar'(Irish) by Thin Lizzy

'Wild Rover'(Irish) by Tyr and a punk version by Drop Kick Murphies

    'Children of Lir'(Irish) by Primordial

    'Naita Polkuja Tallaan'(Finnish) by Ensiferum

'The Day our England Died'(English) by Forefather

'We sold our homestead'(Swedish) by Falconer

    'King of Faries'(Irish) by Waylander

    Any others I should consider?

Somewhat different genre, but I guess The Devil Went Down to Georgia counts as a folk song.- The Levellers did a version.

There are two Swedish punk bands (Dia Psalma and Strebers) that have done some traditional folk songs. I don't remember any titles or anything but if you do some digging you'll find them. They are great if you like folk/punk more scandinavian, celtic or whatever than The Dropkick Murphys.

    'Black ROse'- THin Lizzy.
Oh Danny Boy- RObsen and jerome
Pretty much anything by Flogging Molly, a mixture of punk and folk songs, and not as bad as it sounds.

    Black Rose definatley though.

Robsen and Jerome? Are you joking? These boys are for housewives only!

I forgot about Thin Lizzy's Black Rose, and I will check out Flogging Molly.

Yes Gunduz Gece is great, but is it really folk? Sorry I don't know much about Turkish traditional music.

    Hey! I'm not a housewife!

Anyway, its the music which counts, not the status of the artists. Someone tell that to the artists though....

    Black Rose rules, anyway.

You won't get much English folk music, and theres a good reason for that.

When I think of English folk music, I picture old bearded men with green baggyy jumpers, drinking strong cider with names like 'Old Bager' etc.

Actually I don't know too much about English folk music, but what I have heard was very good.

Robsen and Jerome will never set foot in my house, whether in person, or on CD!

*sings* And it's no, nay never!

When I think of English folk music, all I can think of is Bob Fleming from the Fast Show. And Morris Dancers.

Hmmm, I wonder how many rock bands have covered English folk?

Robsen and Jerome will get you yet.....

I seen some Morris Dancers at a local Beltane fair up north. It looks like good fun!

Forefather covered 'When our England died' - an English band, and an English traditional song.
