[IMG] For those of you who don't read the front page of SP (shame on you), read this:

Well, this is the proverbial it. Sorcerers's Place is back in all its glory. A lot has happened in the last few days so an explanation is in order.

Before we moved to this new server, while SP was being hosted on the PCGC server, that server went down for a whole week and all I could do was stand and watch hopelessly. I already had everything set up to move to a new server, but couldn't do it because until that old server got back online, I was unable to transfer the message boards to this server. Anyway, this has now been completed and everyone should be accessing this new server by now.

However, Sorcerer's Place is now completely on its own. I bought hosting on this server out of my own pocket, and it's currently costing me $140 a month. Since I have no real advertising on any pages yet (except this experimental pop-up on the front page, and the Amazon ads which don't pay anything for just loading them), I can't rely even on the small income ads would bring in. Currently everything short of placing pop-ups on all pages will not cover my expenses.

No, I will not put them on all pages, calm down. At best I'll set up a system that will open one for you every so many hours while you surf on SP. No pop-ups will appear on any pages of our message boards. Since all advertising you see on SP from now on will be mine, I implore you to let the pop-ups load fully (and then close them, you don't have to click on anything), because otherwise they don't pay anything. Same thing goes for imminent banner advertising - please click on the banners once I get them up!

Though even with all this, regular advertising these days pays way too little for me to be able to get just the server costs covered, let alone anything else. Some people to whom I'm eternally grateful have already donated via PayPal, but I hope that more of you will show your appreciation by donating a couple of bucks to help keep SP stay alive. Because, as I said, the advertising alone will not cover it, so I'm now primarily relying on donations.

The PayPal buttons are on the left side of all pages of SP, by the way. More info is available here: http://www.sorcerers.net/Main/helping_sp.php

I'll provide more options for people to help SP and more information here in the upcoming days. And again, thanks to all who have helped SP already.

Feel free to post any questions you might have.

Nothing I can think of I'm afraid. Webhosts only take $$$ as payment. :p

Great to hear that the site is on its own! :) Sadly, I can't give you any money, but we can always hold a bake sale. ;)

EDIT: I reread the FAQ this time, and do people get to have a custom avatar by being good, helpful, devoted people who've been on the boards a long time? (yeah, I know, I'm too lazy to send walkthroughs in or anything  )

yes they do, though I'm not sure I really did that much to obtain it. Except for sticking around and do some... story project thingy stuff I think :)

But I didn't pay for mine in hard earned cash. Wouldn't know how to do that anyhow

    EDIT

a long time is a long time, not some silly 2months time

It feels good to know I am worth half a month of SP:) And for all of the younger people here, fold a buck or 2 in a couple pieces of paper and send it Tal, I used to do it all the time for skateboard catalogs when I was a teenager;) Just think if every regesterd user donated 1 dollar we could have SP for almost 2 years without worry, and don't go crying poverty, if you have a computer you can afford a dollar:hmm:

Sorry Tal but I'm not old enough to have a credit card. I'vr tried talking to my mom to get something from Amazon for me but she won't. She doesn't buy stuff off the internet(how gay is that). So sorry. By the way it is great to have SP back I hope this place can keep it running.

Ummm .... I don't think that Tal's intent with this thread is to get us to figure out how to earn a custom avatar without cash. Now that SP costs him $140/month, he is looking for little green friends to come rushing to his aid.

On this theme, I propose that SP follow the lead of National Public Radio or PBS Television, and have a rund-raising drive.

For $420 you get a long-awaited Greater Avatar. Yes, for the honor of keeping the board alive for 3 months, you can have Firedrake, Demogorogon or Asmodeus.

For $140, you can be "the sponser of the month" and will be allowed to EDIT OTHER PEOPLE's POSTS, but only on the Whatnot's page

For $35 you can sponser the forum for a week, with you name and favorite quote/link/thing on a special page.

For $5 you can sponser a day, with your avatar dancing circles on the bottom of the Whatnot's page.

 just ideas to keep the page alive. either these or we sell Shadow Goddess as an indentured slave for a few years ;) j/k!

Well, you can always get someone to wear a Santa Claus outfit and ring a bell on a sidewalk when Christmas rolls around. ;)

[IMG] Lokken, you should go re-read the Rules/FAQ. Just hanging around is not grounds for getting a custom avatar any more (and it hasn't been for some time now). As was pointed out, SP is costing me, so I can't afford to give anything more out for free than I already am.

As for not being able to pay because you don't have a credit card, well, there's an easy alternative.

Here are my bank account details:

    [snip]

Give that info at any bank and you'll be able to deposit some cash straight into my bank account. Of course, if you're sending sums smaller than $20 it's probably smarter to just put a bank-note in an envelope and mail it to me. I'll give my mailing info to anyone interested, just send me a mail.

well so I re-read the FAQ, though I still say that dudes like Ragusa and Extremist have been around for a long time and helpful deserves one, besides the fact they already got one.
Not taking into consideration they sent something in as well, I guess that sorta is connected *shrugs* oh well :)

be happy, spare a few bucks and get an avatar folks :hippy:

If SP is still up and running in 3½ years from now on (I'll get a credit card by then). Then i'll gladly donate around 100$.

It seems that if only people would accept future promises as payment I could easily manage all of the costs SP is inducing. :aww:

    here's a (crazy) idea...

links to pop-ups! it'll be like 'click to donate' http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum7/HTML/001682.html or 'visit our sponsors', and all the kids without credit cards'll be able to do it!

btw, nice new avatar sorvo- money or favours? ;)
