Help with a bit of Byzantine history

    I've been delving my way through scores of books for a term paper and I've managed to come across a term that I'm unfamiliar with. Found in Procopius' Secret History, there is mention of an official known as a secretis. Procopius explains that they had the privilege of writing the Emperor’s secret dispatches, but I can't find any more information on them (when the office was created, what other function they provided, etc) with my current resources - the classics library that I need access to closes on weekends.

    So my question is, does anyone know more information on this term\official? (for the record, I abashedly admit to trying the usual panicking student approaches of Google and Wikipedia, but to no success). Thanks!
