I have never played a multiplayer game with my friends before and want to, so i ask what connection do we choose, IPX, TCP/IP, or one of the others avaiable.

    also i am wondering if,

-because i have a mod my friend doesnt, does that mean he cant join my multiplayer game, and/or i cant join his, i pretty noob when it comes to this, but my current thinking is if it works then would he kinda get the mod i have for free, i.e. would he have the new content from my mod with having to download and install it,

-or would it just not work and because he has a completely unmodded game and i dont, so do i need to have a unmodded game too.

also as i said before my friend was having trouble installing mods, he has TOB installed and the latest patch, he had unzipped the mod files to the right place but he got a message saying unable to locate the dialog.tlk file even though the install.exe file and the dialog.tlk file are in the same SOA folder.

i asked these questions before, but it seems my thread was deleted, (or moved somewhere where i cant find it), if it was deleted i would like to know as why, so that i may not do what ever it was that caused the thread to be deleted, if thats why it was deleted, if it was deleted, it would have been nice to have been given as note as too why.

It sort of depends on how your LAN is set up, but being that it's all but of unheard of now'adays not to TCP/IP running on your workstations, this is most likely what you should be using.

IPX/SPX is similar to TCP/IP, but was created by Novell, and isn't a protocol that's typically configured by default.

I'm assuming that you don't have serial connections, and hopefully you're not using modems to play.

So, go with TCP/IP. Make sure that all of the PCs you want to join are in the same logical network (e.g. 192.168.1.x), make sure they're on the same physical network too ;) (i.e. plugged into a shared hub or router). Figure out who your "host" is going to be (should be the person with the beefiest PC), have him/her start a MP game, and have the other players enter the host's IP address to join that game.

Note: if you have any problems connecting, personal firewalls are a common culprit, so be prepared to either turn those off, or open the appropriate ports.

cant really do the LAN thing, one friend is in Australia, other the USA and im in New Zealand,

so is TCP/IP just as simple as one person is the host, and everybody else clicks join, then types in the hosts IP address.

which ports need to be open?

You will also need to make sure that all players have exactly the same mods installed, in exactly the same order.

Elfen, when a topic of yours is moved, you'll get an e-mail letting you know it's been moved. That is, provided you actually check the e-mail you have listed in your profile. And the search function only does one forum at a time.

Congrats on finding where your thread got moved. Sometimes they are unopenable when moved. There was a poll a week ago with that, but it was a double-posted poll.

yeh, i apologize to the people who run this forum for the seemingly unnecessariness of having two almost identical threads in two forums, its just i think more people will see my thread and help if it is in the TOB forum rather than the Online Forum.

    right so to clarify,
-we have to have SOA, TOB and the patch installed (in that order)
-we all need the same parts of the same mods in the same order
-we all choose TCP/IP, one person is the host, and everybody else types in his address when the click on join.

is that about the jest off it,

feel free to close(or delete) my threads, unless there is something im still missing

Strange - you apparently had one thread that you put into the wrong forum moved to the correct one, then, rather than leave that be, you made a virtually identical one (again in the wrong forum).

    Hmmmmm.

Let me quote the forum desctiption for Online Adventures for you:

Now, that seems to cover your questions pretty well, so I think we'll just shut down this duplicative thread. Don't open a third one please.

By the way, do you have the option to receive emails from admins and mods enabled in your profile? If not, the email that you receive when a thread is moved will not arrive.

[IMG] I'll move this to the proper forum, others looking there might find it useful.

As for the issue of searching for a thread and the search result link to it being broken; this happens because the thread was actually deleted when moved from a forum and then recreated in the new one. So if you hit the old bookmarked link, you'll get a "thread does not exist" notice. The same will happen if you look for it in the old forum, because when threads are moved, the search index is not updated, so it will still return the old, now-deleted thread, despite it not being there. This is fixed only periodically when the board search indices are updated globally.
