    Click My Computer
    Open file "kdbfkejf"
    type in "feljfel"

And stuff, because I am too confused!!! PLEASE!!! I MUST HAVE PORTRAITS!!!

[IMG] Make a directory called "portraits" in your game's install folder and copy them there. You'll be able to select them in the game then.

If you'd make a search for "portraits" in this forum you'd get a list of a few dozen topics with the same theme... So next time use search for such commonly discussed queries.

Ok, it sounds like you really need things from basics so I'll try (from memory) to help out. of course, a detailed approach might be a bit patronising if you know your stuff so the following link might be all you need:

    Click me

You might also find the Portrait manager useful (I've never used it though). You can get it by clicking here .

If you need step by step stuff, it's a bit tricky without knowing where you installed the game and what operating system you are using, etc. It's also a problem working from memory, but here goes. I hope this is useful:

    1) double click on the 'My Computer' icon
    2) double click on the 'C:' drive icon
    3) double click on the 'Programme Files' folder
    4) double click on the 'Black Isle' or 'Bioware' folder (whichever there is).
    5) assuming you installed the game in the default place you should now see the icon for the Baldurs gate 2 folder. Double click on this folder to open it.
    6) look to see if there is a folder called 'Portraits'
    7) if there is already such a folder, skip to 8). If not, click on the 'File Menu' select 'new' and then select 'folder'. A new folder appears, which you should rename 'Portraits'
    8) Now connect to the internet and find the portraits you want to download. There are various ones available from this site.
    9) Click on the portrait file to download. A box should open to ask you what you want to do with the file you are trying to download. Select the 'Save' option.
    10) You will be asked where you want to save the file. At the top of the box, you will see a small window marked 'Save in'. You can click on the little drop down menu and choose where the downloaded portrait file will be stored. For simplicity use the dropdown menu to chose c:bad:programme files\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate\Portraits - this is the new folder you jst made. Then click save.
    11) Once the file has downloaded another box will open and ask you what you want to do with the file. Chose the 'Open Folder' option.
    12) You should now see a window showing the new portraits file in your Portraits folder. It will not be called 'Portraits' but will have a name given to it by whoever made the files.
    13) Double click on this Portraits file. The chances are that it will be a 'zipped' file and hopefully your machine will have a programme to unzip the individual portraits. Zipping is a technique to compress lots of files into one smaller file. There are several different types of zipping programmes and so I can’t talk you through this in detail. You should get an option to 'unzip' the files into a directory somewhere. You should chose the c:bad:programme files\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate\Portraits again.
    14) Hopefully your new portrait files will now be showing in the Portraits folder. if they are move to 15). If not, the Unzip programme has put them somewhere else. You could use the Start/Search button to hunt them down. Often though, the Unzip programme creates a new folder within the Portraits folder. If so, double click on this new folder then chose 'Edit' form the main menu. Then chose 'Select All'. Next chose 'Edit' again and then select 'cut'. Now move back into the c:bad:programme files\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate\Portraits folder and chose 'Edit' and then 'Paste'. Your new portrait files should now be in the Portrait folder ready fro use in the game.
    15) To use the Portraits in game, you can assign them to a character when you create it. You can also change the portrait of an existing user character by editing it in game. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I did this so I can’t remember the details. I think it's on the information screen (with all the stats) and then the customise button.

    Good luck.

Now start the game, create a character, and when it comes time to choose a portrait, hit the "custom portraits" button. Read steps 14 and 15 of Slappy's post.

    Go to the map
    c:bad:programme files\Black Isle\Baldurs Gate\Portraits
and check if your portraits files are there. If they are, don't toutch them. Instead, start the game, new game (at least a new char) and click the little 'custom potrait' button under the normal portraits, when choosing them. If the files aren't there, than I don't know how to explain better than slappy.

OK, I'm guessing that the file you are seeing is the zip file that is used to compress all the individual portrait files into one smaller file. To open this file and access the portriats you will need an unzipping programme. It sounds like you might already have such a programme as it sounds like something is happening. However, I can't talk you through this step by step as I might not have the same programme as you.

To take this further we need more information from you. So could you do the following:

    1) right click on the file that you now have in your portrait directory. From the menu that opens select 'Properties'.
    2) a Properties window should open. Read this and let us know what it says against 'Type:' and 'MS-DOS name:' If these don't show (depends on your operating system) try to find something on the Properties box that says what the full name of the file is. Something like 'name.zip' or 'name.bmp' or 'name.txt'
    3) next click on the file and let us know 'exactly' what happens. Are any message boxes opening that ask for information, etc. If a small programme window seems to open, select the 'Help' function from the menu and select an option that will be something like 'About xxx' Make a note of what it says in the box that opens. It should tell you what the programme name is and what version it is. Let us know this info.
    4) Post again with all of this info and also tell us what operating system you are using. Do this by double clicking on 'My Compute' then double clicking on 'Control Panel' then double clicking on 'System'. The box that opens will say something like System: Microsoft Windows 98

With all this info, we might be able to help you further.

Oh yes, finally another thought occurs. If the problem is just opening the zip file, I could do this and send you the portraits in the format that you need. If you give me the link to the Portriats file you downloaded I can do this for you. Of course, I will also need your email address to be able to send them to you and the email might take absolutely ages to download if you are on a 56k modem rather than broadband or cable.
