Thanks, Newfie. But the American editions of Erickson's books are different. Nevertheless, it is a good one....

I know, Chandos but I read about all the complaints of the American one, so...

On a sidenote. Does anybody still have the wallpaper of George RR Martin's A song of Ice and Fire which was discussed here some time ago? It's the one with Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar dishing it out on the Trident.

I'd love to have that one again.

Why did people complain about the American cover?

The cover of the new Terry Brooks book is identical to the cover of Deadhouse Gates in almost every way.

They said it was reflective of modern pulp fantasy with glossy Fabio like heroes surrounded by beautiful babes. Sounds alright to me, but that ain't what Erikson is all about. A lot of purist fans of Erikson don't like it.

American covers for most fantasy books that didn't originate in the US (and some that did) are generally in the bad/horrible/godawfulnoooo category. I suspect that the people who decide the cover switches are some overpaid PR reps who've never read a fantasy book in their life, but are quite convinced that they know exactly what those weirdos reading fantasy novels would like.

Did I mention that 99% of PR people in the entertainment industries I've had contact with are either complete and utter morons with egos the size of Australia, or people so grossly incompetent at their job that it takes years of practicing patience so that you can communicate with them without blowing your top? Well, now you know. I can imagine that either of these types of folks could come up with such "great" American covers and consider their job excellently done.

In my opinion Tal's post is an understatement. I am sitting here with a paperback of Briggs' "Raven's Strike". I think the cover is supposed to represent the heroine. Any resemblance to her is non-existant.
