Hide in Shadows/Stealth

Are these two abilities equivalent? In other words, does an item which increases the hide in shadows ability also help a Ranger's stealth?

I was thinking of creating a Stalker, and making acquiring The Night's Gift a priority...

 

That's a good question Truper! I always thought items that increased the stealth ability would never help the ranger because i thought they had a cap around 99% or something, is that right?

 

You can go well beyond 99%, IIRC the cap is 250%

Hide in Shadows and Move Silently are both part of a ranger's stealth; what the game does is averages them together, so an item that increases either HS or MS would increase stealth. Racial, dexterity, and item bonuses all apply, and the "cap" is only for the ranger's base ability, so even a human ranger with just an moderately decent DEX can easily get over 100% at lvl 13 and up (where the base sticks at 99).

For examples:

• The Night's Gift gives +20% to HS, so a ranger's stealth would go up 10%.
• The Boots of Stealth give HS +15% and MS +20%, so a ranger's stealth goes up 17.5%.
• The Boots of Elvenkind give +30% to MS, so a ranger's stealth would go up 15%.

EDIT:
And as Caradhas mentioned, there is a default cap for all skills at 255, due to them being a one byte field or something like that. But that's hardly anything to worry about unless you're soloing a thief or something.
