It's pretty cool looking, but what's the big deal? Just because it was privately funded?

I mean, it's completely suborbital, and it didn't look like it had any advance in technology. I'd imagine the design would have to be very different to survive an orbital re-entry, so as it stands, it looks like an expensive amusement park ride...

[IMG] Bah! The privatization of space should usher in a new era of space travel and exploration. Just think, a thirty minute plane ride from New York to Hong Kong via a suborbital scramjet spaceplane!!

Private companies sending corpronauts to the moon and back...And hopefully, an economically viable manned mission to Mars in my lifetime. It's little things like this that become the catalyst for greater achievements...Reread this thread in 20 years and see how close I got!

I bet you don't end up getting very close at all. I remember all those old "2000 AD" annuals I used to read as a kid and they all said we would have robots and personal spaceships by the mid 1990s. Buck Rogers was supposed to have gone to the 25th century by 1997 and the first manned mission to another star was due to blast off by 1999 (powered by some spuriously vague source of energy).

The key word in all this is 'commercially viable'. The reason why most of the technological advances in the last 20 years have been in consumer electronics, business computing, and genetics is because there is a quick buck to be made out of research in these areas.

There will not be very many trips to the moon, Mats, or anywhere in space unless they are funded by some entity that does not care about getting much in the way of short-term profits.

@Sir Belisarius: So, what you meant was not that the world just changed, but that it is about to change? Personally, I don't see how it's such a big deal. The Lear jet didn't change the world, and neither will this. That the superwealthy now have new playgrounds does not impact the world at large. And even if someone does eventually colonize Mars, how will that impact us? Yes, there will be different stories on the news, but what will really change in our day-to-day lives? How will the world's population be affected?

That's pretty neat, but it's not like it changed the world.

[IMG] Maybe I'm just blowing out of proportion, but I think the private launching of people into space is a giant achievement. I think it's the first step in the larger exploration of our solar system and galaxy. Right now, it's just "we've pierced the atmosphere and touched space."

In 20 years or so, it'll be: "I'd like to go see where Neal Armstrong walked on the Moon."

In 50 years, little kids will be whining: "But we went to Mars for vacation LAST year!"

Governments tend to drag their feet when undertaking challenges, but regular people look for better, cheaper, faster ways to do things...And with this short trip, I think it's a signal of big changes to come...Just MHO.

Interesting opinion, but I still think it is ASTRONOMICALLY unlikely that anybody currently registered on the Boards O' Magick will have visited Neil Armstrong's footstep on the moon within the next 20 years. Maybe sometime in the next 60 years.

The only way I can see it happening is if some sort of reality TV show can be invented and sold all around the world (to raise the necessary cash) where the winner gets to become an astronaut. What I am saying is that there has to be some sort of immediate commercial payoff for it to ever 'get off the ground'. (Ooh, another bad pun. :toofar: )

Hey this made our front page. But then, a squirrel eating a french fry was on the day before.

You guys are thinking small. This will allow rich people in the near future to travel faster. That means that in order to keep people flying the regular way, the airlines are going to have to improve conditions and/or lower prices.

Just think, first class being extended through the whole plane.
