Is there a maximum number of hit points that a character can gain per level, In BG1 a fighter with strength 18 could gain 14hp per level up  , now my main character (a fighter) will only gain a maximum of 3hp per level up

Barbarians can get 16 or 17 I suppose, because of the d12 when they level up, and because of the con. of 19

Once you hit a certain level you only get 3, 2, or 1 HP per level-up.

Depending on class: 3 for a fighter... etc... 1 for a Mage.

Kicks in about level 9 or 10 depending on the class.

As for the max HP through hacking, I think it is 255, but I haven't tried this yet. This might be wrong since there are items that add to HP like Balduran's Helm or that green Ioun Stone, etc.

After reaching a high level (depending on the class) the character gains just a few hitpoints without the bonuses obtained by its Con!!

Warrior, barbarians and cleric classes gain a fixed amount of hp after reaching level 9. Rogues and mages reach this point at level 10. At level 10 and higher warriors and barbarians gain 3hp, while clerics gain 2. Rogues gain 2hp per level over 10, mages 1. If you get a higher CON score, through potions or other magic, this will be calculated on the first levels. So a level 13 fighter with 17 CON that drinks a potion that raises his CON to 18 would only gain 9hp.

Other classes than warriors or barbarians actually have no use for a CON higher then 16, because they can get a maximum CON bonus per level of 2.

A Consitution of 17 and up gives you a 100% chance to survive the resurection spell.
    A 16 Con only gives you 98% chance. ;)

Of coarse I don't know if that rule is enforced in the BG saga.
Some others are skipped over... :p
