I play a Fighter/Thief and just recieved my first HLAs. Picked Use Any Item as the first one, though I got another point to spend. Since I'll probably get Assassination, is Power Attack -> Critical Strike -> Smite a good pick? Getting a round of backstab damage ought to be more efficient than one of criticals. Is it worth spending two points to get Smite, or should I just go with Whirlwind and Assassination and enjoy myself?

Also, how many HLAs does one get? Blade, Fighter, Sorcerer, Wizard, Cleric and F/T to be specific?

Both assasination and critical strike are good, some are immune to backstab, some cover their heads well. Smite is cool, you can actually push the enemies so it's great when you need to protect weakened NPCs, and it stuns bad guys, no saves.

You'll get more HLAs than you ever need anyway.
Fighters get 21 HLAs, Thiefs 16, FT 23

If you pick Smite, make sure your F/T is equipped with the boots of speed so s/he can hurry over and stab her/his smited foe.

Personally, I got UAI and Assassinate for my F/T. I then stocked up on traps and WW+GWW.

You can only take assassination once (and smite too), but you can take critical strike over and over. Like Minh said, different enemies are immune to different things, although in general most of the ones that are immune to backstab are also protected from criticals. If your guy has a high base attacks per round it's not worth taking whirlwind at all, though.
