I just got tickets for the Flyers' home opener! 4th row! Down low! Which is my favorite place! I'm taking my zoom lens to get some good shots!

That darn league you there in america destroyed the best hockeyplayer Sweden has ever had with its foul and dirty play. Its more about hurting your opponents stars than to make way for your own.

Waaah, waaah, if he wanted to play "skill" hockey he should have stayed in Sweden!

Hard hits and fighting are part of the game...at least the way North Americans play it. I love it! I wouldn't change it! Adding the skating skill that European players bring to the game adds another exciting facet...But you need to do it all!

Hmm, let's start a discussion I already had with Avarahtar for ages:

Sir Bel even if you think that hockey is hard game (which it is) and that you are a pussy if you cant take a tackle so is something wrong when a player has to retire at age 28 because of several severe injuries one wich was lifethreathening. I think that hockey should be played hard but fair but in todays NHL every team has some thug that only gets to play because he is willing to do things in the rink that would have sent him to jail outside it.

 

Bless you, Headbanger! I played hockey when I lived in England but here they call that "FIELD" hockey. My husband is an ardent ICE hockey fan but just rolls his eyes when I call it that. So thanks for helping me win this one.

And real hockey is scary stuff since, unlike ice hockey you are not covered in padding and you sure don't wear a mask. The ball does not slide gracefully across the lawn like a puck on ice but flies at you like a crazed bee. Especially dangerous when you have to wear a school uniform with a skirt... I had ball-shaped bruises all over me. Of course here in Canada ice hockey is won by beating the snot out of the opposing team, so that's pretty scary too!

 

Headbanger - That is FIELD hockey...You silly Europeans have a different name for everything!

Joacqin - I think ICE hockey is second only to baseball as the greatest sport ever! I understand your agrument, but for me, thuggery is part of the game. Blistering Checks, hammering people in the crease, and the occasional dropping of the gloves are as much a part of the game than being able to skate circles around opponents, rocket-like shots, and deking defenders out of their skates!

Fighting is part of the game...It's a morale booster that is crucial to rallying the team to victory! Or in the alternative, make a team pay for beating them on the scoreboard! Plus, we Americans don't have cheerleaders to oggle during an ICE hockey game, so we need fighting to distract us!

If this rant doesn't make any sense that just remember the famous words of some hockey nut in our american past: "Give blood, play hockey!"

I also think the 7 or 8 million dollars a year could ease the pain of a few bumps and bruises acquired along the way.

no sir bel, i think your thinkin of beer drinking. And you should take a look at your players. Most are not american, they are CANADIAN. And they like money like anyone else

 

I have nothing agains alittle crosschecking or the occasional fist fight but when players only task is to injure the opponents starplayers so he cant shoot those rocket shots or make piruettes around the defenders. If you hadnt figured by know so is the player im talking about Peter Forsberg, damn he got a sliced spleen (?spelling?). Your team was the flyers right? Look at Lindros he is already finished ( he might belong to the Rangers but i doubt that he will be an asset to the team). Yesterdays superstar played until they were almost 40 today they have to retire before 30 if they want to be able to live a decent live. But as you said they are getting tons of money but so they might get over it but wouldnt it be more fun if the good players could play an entire season without some thug bashing their head from behind with a stick.

As a die-hard hockey fan, I have to say it is *the* best game in the world. It requires more skill than any other sport, and if you disagree, then think of it this way: not only are players required to control a puck that is only 3 inches across with a stick (not feet, hands, or any other body part), but they have to do it on skates, at high speed, on an unforgiving surface, *and* avoiding the 6'3 220lb defensemen cruising towards them at 30km/h.

And, despite having a population of only 30 million people, Canadians still make up 60% to 65% of the NHL - it's our game, but your welcome to play

Hmm....what else can I rant about....

Oh, yeah. Physical play is definitely part of the game, but I agree on one point: there's not place in the NHL for goons who can't skate, shoot or do anything other than beat than %&*$ out of other players. They don't belong. On the other hand, guys like Scott Stevens, Lindros, Claude Lemieux, Gary Roberts, Keith Premeau, Shanahan, and countless others who have skill, *and* can ring your bell if they need to, they belong. Notice, they're also all Canadian :b

Joacqin -- no worries. Forsberg will be back. He's big, strong and determined. And I doubt you could pay him to play in a less physical European league. And the punishment isn't anything new. Bobby Orr, the greatest defensman to ever play (and second only to Gretzky as a player) had his career cut short. He only played one full season in the 12 years he played, and has had surgery on his knees countless times. That was in the 70's.

My favourite team is the Maple Leafs, I won't go on about how good they are going to do because it's a given that they will screw up in the playoffs.

To Headbanger, it's called HOCKEY!!!! You "over there" peoples are just plain strange....

To Joacqin, the only reason Lindros keeps getting concussions is because he's an idiot who never learned how to keep his head up.

Not to mention, it is really hard to feel sorry for anyone who plays any kind of sport that is known for any type of contact.

You decide to play those kinds of sports knowing that something life threatening could happen to you, but you concent to that, hope it never happens, and continue to play the sport because it is what you love to do.

In FInland, there's the world's second toughest league, the SM-league! (SM-liiga= Finnish Champpionship League)

My fave team, Oulun Kärpät, rule! Last year, it was their FIRST year in the league of 13 teams, and they ranked fourth! They dropped the winner of the... the.. all the games before Play-Offs. They rule!

It's a common opinion here that the NHL is the Farm League for our national one...
