I have no problems killing animals for the purpose of eating them. It's natural, thousands of species do it. I have no problems killing animals that are a nuisance -- gophers, beavers, cats, rats, in-laws, you get the idea. I hate animal rights fascists like PETA and think they should be treated as nuisance animals as well. They don't come much more right wing than LKD.

However, to kill animals for the purpose of entertainment is immoral in the extreme. An animal's death should serve a valid purpose for the killer. Chuckwagon races are not valid IMHO. So I am in favor of curtailing the Stampede events that frequently end in horse deaths. Bet you guys are surprised!

So you are ok with stopping all rodeos? Because no matter how safe you try to make things, accidents are gonna happen. It's not like they killed the horses as entertainment.

No, but you need to assess the risks involved. If there is a high risk of deaths (and there appears to be in this case), then safety measures should be instituted, or the specific event cancelled outright.

I'm with Splunge -- a common sense risk assessment is vital. In addition, rodeos are, IMHO, somewhat anachronistic. If they can do events without animal deaths in such accidents, then who am I to interfere with what someone else finds fun or entertaining? But when deaths are commonplace, for no other reason than entertainment, then that's a big problem.

That is true, and I'm somewhat likely to agree - I mean, it's not like bull fighting, where the killing of the animal in itself is the entertainment. (Not that bull fighting is common in the US, I'm just using it as an example.) This event seems more like the Iditarod - deaths of the animals happen, but that is netiher the intent nor purpose of the sport. Hell, horses die every year in regular horse racing. If this should be banned, then all horse racing would need to be.

It's my understanding that in rodeos horses are FAR more likely to die than in regular racing. It's the frequency and nature of the deaths that causes me concerns.
