You need to find spell scrolls that you copy into your spellbook. When you select a spell scroll to see its description, there will be the option to attempt to write it into your spellbook if you are able to.

When you attempt to write a spell it will say whether or not the writing was successful, if success the spell will show up in your mage book, and you will be able to memorize it later on. If not successful the spell is gone -- COMPLETELY!

If you started a Mage with LOW INT, you might consider starting over, or just deleting that char and replacing it with another smarter mage!

FYI mage scrolls are few and far between in IWD, and many people just reload a game when they fail to write a mage spell-- I do most of the time!

Also if your mage is a specialist they cannot memorize some spells... read the IWD manual page 136 to get mage opposition schools listings!

Alternatively, quicker than reloading is to go to the options screen, click on gameplay and turn the settings down to easy or very easy (not normal or above). Go back to the character (I just have a bard this game - no mage) and click to write the spell. Don't forget to return your game settings back to what they were. Mine are normal/core rules.

What I usually did for Bard and Mage characters was save all the spells up that I wanted memorize for quite a while (if I could get by without them) and then have the character gulp down a couple of potions of genius to push their int way up, then memorize the scrolls in mass quantities.
