[IMG] I'm newbie to BG and am learning the hard way how to play it. :D

Got a question for you : how do you casts your spells without getting killed while you cast them ? What are the best spells to begin with ? :heh:

Last question : not being too familiar with AD&D rules do you know of a site where I could get more info ? :square:

( My, my, aren't we friendly today, SleepleSS... )

It kind of depends on how you are getting 'killed', I suppose, and what your character class is (cleric or mage?). In any case, protection spells like Mirror Image or Shield or the like might help.

It might be a good idea to have a fighter or two in front to keep the enemy busy while your spellcasters do their thing...

    (Sorry if I wasn't too helpful ;) )

[EDIT:] Hello, by the way. :) (Where are my manners... tsk tsk)

Please ignore SleepleSS, the wannabe admin. Most people here are friendly.

Are you using any defensive spells? How about defensive items (such as bracers, robes, etc)? Like Powerpuff said, keep your mages to the back and send fighters in ahead. You should also try to scout ahead, with a thief or a ranger, so you don't walk into any unpleasantness unprepared.

Thank you for being so helpful, in fact I am a fighter/mage but its the procedure that killing me not casting the spell itself. By the time I've clicked on my spellbook than chosen my spell I've gotten a few blows in. Are there any shortcuts or best way to cast them ? And how do you tell them apart (red, white, blue) ?

Can you tell i'm really an ignorant ! :shame:

As far as SlepleSS goes : i'm sure he is quite nicer and that he is probably having a bad day :holy: after all i had written in a forbidden manner for the list.

Press <spacebar> to pause the game before you start selecting spells. You can also assign shortcut keys to spells in the 'BGConfig' utility that comes with the game, in case you prefer playing a more 'realtime' type of game.

The colors of the spell icons are determined by the school or sphere it belongs to (if I'm not terribly mistaken).

As Powerpuff said, pause. Also, if your fighter/mage is fighting in close quarters, it is going to be difficult to successfully cast the spell. This is because it takes turns to cast and your enemies will be attacking you while you are casting. A successful hit will interrupt casting.

BTW, why are you opening the spellbook to cast? You should be using the spellcasting icon at the bottom of the screen. It looks like a crescent moon.

I suggest as posted above, hit the space bar to pause the game, then set your characters that are your tanks in front and set your casters in back.

Then, hit space bar again and get them set, then hit pause again and click your characters to choose spells....

    Easy way to fight....LOL.....

[IMG] If you prefer playing in Real-Time, you can always go to BGCONFIG (the configuration program) and set quick spell keys.

For example: When i press 'A', it casts the first spell in my spellbook.

And until you move into higher levels, i suggest either treating your Fighter/Mage as a straight Mage or a straight Fighter.
So: either Fight, or Cast Spells. :hahaerr:

    Anyway..hope that helped.
And welcome to the Boards! :)

: oh, and one last thing.
Red spells are Offensive, ones that cause damage to your opponent, or affects him in a bad way.
Blue spells are Defensive, ones that stops damage being absorbed, improves your armour or heals.
White spells are Neutral, ones that Make you able to see your surroundings better, Removing magic in the area, Identifying magic items or allowing you to transform into other creatures (polymorph)

That should make it a bit easier to choose spells without having to read the description for each one. Figher/Mages should pick Blue (defensive) spells early on in the game, to Boost their combat abilities.

Or alternitavely, make your Fighter/Mage profecient in Missile Weapons (darts, slings) and use them in between casting spells. Powerful mage early on!
