This piece is only for players who have got deep into BG2 at least once, I don't want to ruin anything for early first-timers...be warned.

How much do players complete before going off to Brynnlaw, the pirate haven?

For myself, I don't hurry, doing plenty before going there. I usually only miss out on stuff like Kangaxx and the Twisted Rune and sometimes the Slave Lords quests. As a consequence of not leaving much, those quests never seem to get done at all, I must do them this time around, and also I'll do the "adventure like no other" as well this time.

For the first time I am running the more evil party members, and it has really added an extra level of enjoyment this time around. Jan Jannsen was an excellent pickup in place of Yoshimo, and has much better dialogue. So was Korgan, a terrific tank to partner me as a fighter. Viconia is the party cleric, and Edwin is my wizard (conjurer) to round out the party of 5. I thought only two outright fighters might be a little light on the melee, but so far it has worked very well. Viccy can help out in a pinch, once she gets her armour class down and adds some good str. and con. buffs. I have a mind later on in the game to dual wield the Celestial Fury katana(already obtained) and the Equaliser. Korgan can go mental with the Crom Faeyr warhammer when I get the various pieces together.

I usually try to do everything, with the exception of the Twisted Rune, which I only do once everyone has some good weapons, armour and hp total.

I do everything possible. The only thing I leave 'till I get back is Kangaxx. That is purely because I dont have any +4 weapons other than a staff at that point.

I usually do everything before Spellhold. I like to have a kind of urgency in going for Bohdi and stopping Irenicus so it always seemed a bit strange coming out of th underdark and then go off to help druids and kill Firkraag etc. The only time i do this is when I want Immy. I plan on going straight to Spellhold with only doing Aran's quests and some minor attacks. I think this may be too hard, but I'll give it a go...

I used to do most of it, but lately I've only been doing those quests which will result in something useful for my party (besides XP, of course).

I try to stop at 12th level for my character -- I like keeping Imoen and want to level her up as much as possible before chapter seven.

That basically corresponds to the coronet, murders, stronghold, romance, and whatever quests are associated with the NPC's I want.

I usually do them all if I have the patience. But eventually you've replayed the game so many times that you just lose that patience.

The first few times I did everything, but now I'm just doing the ones that are worth a bunch of exp, 'cause it's boring to do stupid quests over and over for little reward or satisfaction.

The first time I played, I went there as soon as possible, now after 5 or 6 more attempts I always wait untill I've done evrything (and maybe a little of the keep, its a good place for magical items and weapons etc...) I'm not that bothered about making sure Imy has enough exp by the time I get there, but I think it helps if you have a &*%$ party.

Does it matter how much experience you have? I thought the monsters got more or less powerful depending on what level you are.

Think its dependant on your char or party exp, not imoen alone...

As far as I can tell, the difficulty of Spellhold is set to the party's XP level. There's also a difference between many of the quests in and around Athkatla dependent on whether you complete them before or after Spellhold.

Anyway, I leave early b/c I like to have Imoen in the party, ready to go, as close to the rest of the party members in power as possible. It also makes sense RP-wise, since I always play "good guys" and would never leave my sister behind. The times I have told her to take a hike I haven't enjoyed so much.

I only do some small/medium quests, just enough to get my main character to a reasonable level (about 14), then set sail for Imoen, that way Imoen won't be very weak when I get her.

Since Imoen is L12 Mage when we see her again and it takes a while for a dual to get to those levels, I can afford to do a lot of quests without wondering if Imoen will be too weak. Since a higher level party can thrash pretty much anything, I dont mind getting to spellhold later.

I usually do all the quests I am going to do in chapter 2/3 bar maybe the twisted rune or kangaxx. I find that the happenings in chapter 6 are fairly urgent and don't like to take time out from them to do other things.
[Edit] YEAH DUDE!!! NEW GEM!!!!!!!! :D :) :)
