After I played Oblivion for a while, I was horrified by how much the game crashed. Running Vista is apparently causing some software conflicts although they're supposed to be compatible. After my disappointment, I decided I'm give Morrowind a try, but is it any more reliable? I don't wanna fork out the money for a game I won't play again, Oblivion crashes every 30 minutes of gameplay sometimes which I consider unacceptable.

So firstly, is Morrowind likely to run more smoothly, and second, any advice to stop Oblivion crashing all the time?

In my experience, Oblivion is more stable than Morrowind. Haven't played Morrowind in a while, but it could crash quite often (every 15 minutes), then hold up for a couple of hours on end. I remember Morrowind being rather prone to CTD, where in Oblivion I may have encountered the occasional crash, but much less often than in Morrowind.

As I recall, Morrowind did get somewhat more stable as time (and patches, expansions, my hardware, etc.) got on.

Sorry, friend - I'm playing Morrowind on Vista now (my new PC came with it, and it's not that bad...yet) and it's having the same erratic 'play life' that henkie mentioned; sometimes hours and hours without a Crash To Desktop, and sometimes maybe only twenty minutes before things stop responding and it closes out. I've gotten in the habit of saving very often (entering a shop, just after taking a boat or silt strider, etc.)

FWIW, this isn't much different than my experience of Morrowind+XP, even after all the patches and stability mods, but *shrug* Your Mileage May Vary.

Ya, I ran into the same problem. What really helps is if you turn the graphics down the game lasts for a lot longer.

Interesting notion, but the last time I played Morrowind without mods is a very, very long time ago. And I really wouldn't want to play without them anymore either.

And, remember - in the case of the 360 it's not the software that's bugged: :p
    Check out the end bit
    1/3 is relevant
    Check 'em ALL out

Consoles are nice in that the hardware's standardized and thus developers can be a little more confident that their game will function properly, since they don't have to worry about a myriad of different sound cards/video cards/memory configurations/etc that occur with PCs.

However, with the Xbox360? The problem exists that this was designed, developed and produced by Micro$oft, who are famous for their products' stability...

My brother has a 360. Remember the wave of overheating crashes? He was part of it. In the end, he had to get a Xbox 360 Cooler Master unit to keep the damn thing from overheating.

It's been working good so far. :skeptic:

I had a lot of troubles whit games crashing in vista. My niece, an Elder scrolls junkie, has little problems whit Obilvion on this vista pc except for the crash when she closes the game. The i decide to play Guild wars again.

Guild wars would not run due to an hardware error. So I started dinging and found a problem in my memory modules. The crashes as as good as gone.
