How to start the Harpers Quest?

I have completed BG2 for the second time, and still the Harpers Quest that is central to the Jaheira romance has failed to start!

What am I doing wrong? I thought it was a simple case of Jaheira will get called away at some stage during the game, and then I would do my bit.

I think this is the only thing I have been unable to achieve.

Help? Anyone?

well, it all starts when you interupt the bandits that try to kill the harper. Take him back to the hold and lo and behold... speak to Xan and it starts. If that isnt happening, wll it has to be a bug, so get the latest patch from the home page.

 

I have completed the quest involving Xan and the double crossing of the Harpers. I have also completed the Jaheira curse quest, but after that Jaheira from what I have read is supposed to be called to a meeting with the master harpers.
I have been adventuring for over 70 days, and still she received no summons.
The only thing I can think of is that I did not speak with the Harpers inside the Harpers building - maybe that is the trigger to start the ball rolling

 

If the mage has already been assassinated by the Harpers, then you should have progressed. Remember, though, that most of Jaheira's quests are triggered in the woods and are sometimes triggered after resting. Try sleeping outside de'Arnise Keep and see if that works.

 

I just remembered....I did rest ouside D'Arnise Keep and got attacked by a group of bandits. One of them had a knife to Jaheira's throat so I killed him - Jaheira wasn't too impressed though!
Do you think that could be my problem? If so is there anyway you can save the romance after you make a mistake - I mean she is still alive, and that bandit isn't breathing!

Oh, you meant Xzar. You gotta do that quest first, and later somebody will call for Jaheira.

 

Jaheira took off on me after I killed the bandits that were holding her hostage too. Since I was tired of chasing down all the side quests that kept popping up (I was endlessly being interrupted on my journey to Winspear Hills), I reloaded and the bandits never appeared again. This makes me think that the quest is triggered somewhat randomly and it may not be worth your time to try and trigger it, just do the quest once it is triggered.

 

If you forced the attack on the bandits (i.e. Jaheira got her throat slit), then the romance is dead. That doesn't mean, however, that the rest of her quests are dead. Have you tried sleeping outside de'Arnise Keep since then?

 

I haven't tried sleeping outside D'Arnise since then, I might give it a go and see what happens.
Since the romance with Jaheira is most likely dead, can I start a new romance with another character - or do I get just one shot?

 

If you didn't choose between Jaheira and any other girls, I think you can have another Romance. Unless you said bad stuff to them.

 

Once the romance dies and you have already done the Xzar quest, Meronia should show up instantly. I strongly suggest getting the Improved Jaheira Romance mod and the latest game patches.

You have to give the bandits whatever they want or they get mad. Download Extremist's Romancing Guide and read it.

That's not entirely true. There is going to be a fight no matter what you choose as your option. What option you choose, however, determines how the romance progresses (or if the romance will progress).

And the guide is good. Quite good actually, but I would try to do a romance without it first. Kind of takes something away if you have the script in front of you.
