My wife and I went out with another couple for dinner and to listen to some jazz last night, and we got to talking about sleeping patterns. My wife does not sleep well. She often finds it difficult to fall asleep and will wake up easily in the middle of the night and not be able to get back to sleep. I, however, sleep like the dead. Asleep within 5 minutes of laying down and I do not wake up in the middle of the night.

Our friends had a similar thing to report, in that she was just like my wife, and he was like me (except that when his wife got up, he would often wake as well -- this does not happen to me).

The women claimed it was a musician thing (both are musically trained and have professions in the music industry) as many of their friends have similar issues.

So, how do you sleep? Just an informal survey (although, if you are musically trained and sleep like the dead, I'd like to know that so I can keep that little argument in reserve ;) )

I am a terrible sleeper, We sleep with a fan on constantly in the room all year around to make sure there is one constant sound as any sudden noises will wake me instantly.

I sleep very well. It's probably my greatest skill. ;) I do wake up fairly often, but it doesn't bother me. I just go right back to sleep after a few moments of thinking "Ah, I'm going back to sleep."

Does it have to be trained, specifically? i.e., is the theory that those with classical training are made to sleep poorly, not just musically inclined or creative people? I could see creative people being sleep-addled, as, depending on how creative they are and in what direction their sensibilities lie, they may be the 'carry the weight of the world' type. The training causation is more difficult to see.

My wife doesn't have trouble falling asleep, but once she wakes up, she's usually up for the rest of the night. We had a thunderstorm last night around 1 am that woke all of us up, but Jack and I were able to fall back asleep fairly quickly. She said she was up until 3 am.

As for myself, while I am a fairly light sleeper in that it's not uncommon for me to wake up a couple of times every night, I can usually fall back asleep in a few minutes. If anything, I have trouble falling asleep first thing when I go to bed. I have a longer "wind down" timer than most people apparently. I would guess it takes me a good 15 or 20 minutes once I lay down to fall asleep at first, but much less than that if I wake up during the night.

Neither of us are well trained.

I usually fall asleep within 10-15 minutes. I do wake up a few times during the night, but not usually for long (a few minutes or so).

Most of the time, if don't get woken up by an emergency call on my cell, or by a crying baby, I sleep very well, and very soundly. I tend to work myself just shy of exhaustion, so I'm sure that contributes to sleeping hard.

I do have my restless nights, where I can't turn my brain off no matter how hard I try. Thankfully, those nights are few and far between.

I am a trained musician (guitar, bass, vocals, composition... and a bit of piano)... but haven't worked as a professional musician in more than 10 years... so maybe I don't count in this category anymore. Not sure.

I sleep pretty well. I take a while to get to sleep at first, and am a light sleeper, but if something unimportant wakes me up, I'm back to sleep almost instantly.

I sleep like a baby. Like, last night I pissed the bed at least 3 times and woke up crying 5.

I joke, of course, but I am a good sleeper. I work a nights/days shift pattern so I do sometimes feel really tired at weird times, or feel wide awake when I should be tired, but generally when I'm asleep nothing ever wakes me up. I've slept through earthquakes, thunderstorms and all sorts. All the telephone poles got ripped up in our street once with some of the most devastating winds seen round here in years. Did I wake up? Did I ****. I also sleep through my alarm regularly, so I have 2 set, one to go off 5 minutes after the other.

I know when I've not had enough sleep too. Generally enough for me is about 7-8 hours, although I've been known to be OK with 6. Any less and I'm falling asleep as soon as I stop, and try to watch some TV or something.

I am a light sleeper and have trouble falling asleep. Some nights I am up to 1-2 AM, though I rise at 5 am everyday. Because my kids are up. Makes for a tired kind of day. I hear every fricking noise there is to hear in my small home. Especially hte new cat. Keeps me up all night. Time for another trip to Happy Wok....

    Shoshino try this: http://www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/shop/product-l318.aspx

It's designed for people who suffer from tinnitus and plays a constant noise. You can choose between 4/5 sounds and it might be a bit nicer to listen to than your fan :D

We recommend them as it's inadvisable to sit in silence when you have tinnitus as the quiet can make the condition worse

No, no ... you misunderstand. My wife can bench over 175 pounds; she'll rip the boys off if I fool around.

Like I always say: I sleep very well, but not enough.

There is a certain cause and effect there, though I also sleep well if I do sleep enough. I also have a tendency to fall asleep after coming home from work in the late afternoon/early evening.
