Hm, Sorvo that sounds fairly low to me but I guess that everything is relative to one's own financial situation, plus I am well on my way towards my goal of being mortgage free by age 30 while I imagine you are using a somewhat more sensible amortization period.

I am currently paying about one and a half times that just for my regular mortgage payments, insurance and property taxes are extra. Oh, and mortgage interest is not tax deductible up here. :(

    @ JSBB

You've also got to factor in the area of the country, too. $100k in Houston, for example, can get you a very nice 3 bedroom townhome in a very nice area of town, whereas in say, Los Angeles, you'd pay triple or more than that for the same, with no guarantee the neighborhood is worth a damn. In most cities, you'd be lucky to pay $666 a month for a crappy 1-bedroom casa de' cucarachas, senor.

Wait a minute Sorvo...such a low payment, and no job? And it just happens to be $666? Coincidence?

Now I know how you got so lucky.   Sinner.

    ;)

That is *really* low. Even for the area. The mortgage payment on my grandfather's house is 795, and he has wonderful credit and a small house. The mortgage on my mom's is... well, it exceeds three digits.

Sorvo, try student's life and you need only half of that. I'm sure that any college would be happy to have you. ;)

@ Sorvo - If I can put financial matters aside for the moment, good luck with your new home. I have been a homeowner for two years now and I can tell you that it is a lot of work but it is all worth it.

    @ Death Rabbit

Quite true, but in my mindset the cost of the house had nothing to do with the actual mortgage payments. I set my payments to be the maximum amount that I felt I could afford. Thus, with the interest rate and payment determined it was the duration of the mortgage that was the calculated figure for me. I am well aware that there would have been a minimum that the bank would have accepted but that would have been nearly $400 U.S./month lower then what I am presently paying in regular payments.

I figured you knew that as well. My post was an addition, not a correction.
