I hate trolls more than any other enemy in the game, including Slayer Knights of Xvim. Maybe I would hate Slayer Knights more if they came in the same gigantic swarms that trolls do (e.g. outside Limha's hut), but trolls are immune to pretty much every crowd control spell that I know of (Mass Dominate, Symbol of Hopelessness, Symbol of Fear, Chaos--I think they might be vulnerable to Greater Command though). They hit hard, and you usually have to finish them off with fire, although sometimes they just die if you hit them hard enough.

Does anyone have any particularly nice strategies for killing packs of trolls? Using 4 or 5 DBFBs works but seems wasteful when almost any other monster pack in the game can be disabled with 1 or 2 spells.

you can lure them out a few at a time. They're tough, but melee works if you prepared well.
Running into a whole mess of them and being spotted is bad news, like in that round room in the ice temple. But they usually don't react as a whole, so luring them towards an ambush one by one is the best way.
I remember getting into a mess of trouble in the frost marshes, when i got myself surrounded by 6, one of which could cast protection from fire before incapacitated. Took me ages to find something left in inventory that did acid damage.

Dropping a couple of fireball spells on them to start softens them up nicely. Using spells like Aganizer's (sp?) Scorcher during the battle is a good idea. You find a mace that does fire damage fairly early, so make sure to use that. You should also have be collecting your fire arrows for trolls.

With all of that punishment it usually doesn't take much melee backup to bring them down to near death. When one falls, send all but one character to attack the next, while your remaining character finishes the fallen troll off with fire.

You know what they say... the best offense... is a good... uh, offense! Okay, they don't say that, but they should. :p

    Damn trolls

:mad:I've had fair success with fire arrows and rapid shot as it seems to soften them up to the point they can be finished off with a melee attack and fire. They;re still a pain to deal with as a group.

I thought they were vulnerable to Grease and Web. Granted, they aren't party-friendly spells, but the webbed ones can be easily hit with missile weapons (especially fire and acid arrows), and it will break up the mass of monsters.

Yeah, I use Grease, Web, maybe some Entangle thrown in there too, to slow them down. Then spells like Fireball to damage as many of them as possible while my archers focus on the inevitable 1 or 2 spellcasters amongst them. Have your arcane casters always keep an Acid Arrow spell in reserve, just in case the troll spellcaster gets a Protection from Fire spell on herself.

But the fight right outside of Limnha's hut is a tough fight, no matter what. No real way to shape the battlefield, as you are walking into the battlefield that Limnha already shaped.

I've never had trouble getting Symbol of Hopelessness to hit them, but something in their animations seems to keep them from getting to the fall-down-and-kill-it-with-fire state while they're held, rendering them effectively invincible till the spell wears off. ~_~

Unless perhaps you have a druid (frontal aoe spells and entangle/slow spells) or unless you can erect a wall of summons between you and the trolls quickly (item abilities > spells from impromptu summoning). Haste also helps, or if all your party members can cast invisibility/you a mass invisibility-type spell memorized.
