I never thought I'd find something about Putin to like...

What's there to like about that? It's the usual self-serving political tripe.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Doesn't Russia get a HUGE portion of its oil from Iran? Why would Putin's statements be remarkable?

Remarkable only in that this sort of thing marginally reduces the likelihood Bush'll bomb Iran before his term is up.

    Which is a good thing.

Speaking of which, didn't the Turkish Parliament authorize military action in Iraq? Methinks there may be more pressing issues for Mr. Bush quite soon.

Putin is playing hard ball politics.

The US don't compromise on the missile shield (and NATO expansion eastwards), which in Russian eyes is aimed against Russia. The Russians don't buy that it's designed against Iran for a sec. Me neither. Bush policies of the last seven years looks way too much like 'rolling back Russia' to be accident, and that in an administration that has announced US hegemony and military dominance as policy goals goal, and just loves 'rollback'. No, no accident there.

So Russia is pissed off at the US (who isn't?) for violating Russian interests. That would be here, generally speaking, strategic depth, important for a country whose capital was nearly seized in the last invasion - Operation Barbarossa, quite a legitimate interest for that. Worse, in Russian view the US missile shield, with the US modernisation of their nuclear arsenal would give the US first strike capability, while undermining any remaining Russian retaliation capability, in DC speak ' nuclear primacy'. Think of nuclear blackmail. And Putin is retaliating by visiting Iran.

What Putin does is making life difficult for Bush, while offering his role as a mediator between the US and Iran, but at a price. In the essence he's armtwisting his way back into the game. I doubt the US is willing to pay his price, dropping missile defence, because they expect to get things for free. Anyway, clever move on Putin's part.
