Response from the HD-DVD camp doesn't seem too positive

I guess a winner makes it a lot easier as a consumer, and will be better for the uptake of high-def movies in general. Thoughts?

I don't care that much to be honest - I'm not going to go and buy all my DVDs again just for slightly better quality.

Also Warner sister company New Line will go Blu-ray only. So no LotR HD on the HD-DVD. I do not really see the point in getting a HD-DVD player anymore, since 70 % of the studios support only Blu-ray now (Paramount and Universal are the only big studios left that support HD-DVD only). This might have indeed been the final blow.

Of course not, but there is no point in buying any new releases in SD anymore, IMHO.

Whilst I concur that the vast majority of people (myself included) will not re-buy anything (due to the backward compatibility of players), I still think it's still nice to have a definitive successor to the DVD.

I think it's about time a single format became the standard. The impact on the losing side will be heavy, naturally, but such has always been the case in media wars. As a consumer, I wouldn't touch any high-def discs until one became the standard.

The downside is that BR production will be considerably more expensive, since the production lines used for DVD media can only be upgraded for HD-DVD production. For Blu-ray, everything has to be new.

Too bad it's Sony's technology that's taking the lead. I try not to buy any Sony media after their Rootkit sceme. They better not try that garbage again. :nono: :rolling:

For those unfamiliar with Sony's Rootkit scheme (I wasn't), check here.

I was just reading on blu-ray.com about shrinked Blu-ray lasers, where they also mentioned about organic dye Blu-ray media, which can be manufactured on existing DVD production lines.

Great... I expect HD DVD will be dead by the end of the year.

I also just read that Blockbuster (a video rental place) has backed BR. Yet another nail in the HD DVD coffin. :bad: :rolling:

Gee good stuff - it will be good to see the costs come down a bit before buying in. Despite Bluray standalone players outselling HD-DVD 93:7 last week, Universal still thinks "the format war is far from over" (link). Kind of grasping at straws really. Dinosaurs are not extinct!

Well, Sony should be happy given their loss in the old Betamax vs. VHS war (yes, I remember it. I went Betamax :( )

Beta was way before my time...But IIRC, wasn't it actually a *better* format than VHS? :hmm: :rolling:

Yup. VHS was a big, steaming pile of elephant poo next to Betamax. It just got into more homes, faster.

But then I remember sitting in a Physics lecture just a couple of years ago with my lecturer putting up figures for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (e.g. total storage) and announcing HD-DVD as the "better" format. Pure technological superiority never determines these kinds of battles - compatibility & marketing does. That's why I (and practically everyone else in the theatre) reckoned Sony would win in the end. The bigger company with the bigger clout can market like hell and get other big companies onside. Paramount & Universal made things interesting for a while, but it was always going to turn this way sooner or later.

When I was a young lad, I dropped a VHS on my foot - I stll bear the scars and a pronounced limp. Such a monstrous size they were.

Yep, as Magpie said, Beta was much better. Better sound and picture quality, no delay when reversing, etc. It's only drawback was that it was more expensive (about twice as pricey), and that was it's downfall.

Of course, Beta vs. VHS is completely moot now, given current technology.

(Egads, that sounds rather un-geezerish of me! :p )

Wouldn't blu ray be the technically superior format based on storage space etc? Or was he arguing for features like picture-in-picture and better web integration that Blu-ray trailed in until recently?

The final nail in HD-DVD coffin?

I've recently seen on the great intertube this interesting article from engadget.

    Link

Though, the article is quite short, very short

    Discuss away!
