[IMG] Allright, sometimes I find english words in text, and I don't know what they mean. Most of the time a dictionary is the right place to look a word up, but not all words can be found here.

So I deceided to make this topic, for people to post such words.

Right now I want to know the meaning of the word:
"Turpintine" Note: and I don't mean: turpentine.

Any chance it is misspelled? If not give it in context. I have a huge dictionary leftover from college and it didn't have it.

Checked the Macquarie (huge Aussie dictionary, >2000words and contains all American and English spellings)
    No results

    Encarta Dictionary
No results (for English, German, Spanish and French)

Encarta encyclopedia (to see if there were any references
    No results
also checked www.dictionary.com and www.wikipedia.org - still no results

Are you sure it is a word - What context was it in?

SleepleSS, could you post the line(s) among which you found the word? The context should clarify whether it was 'turpentine" mispelled, or something completely different.

I Found it in this lyric:

Yo! C'mon and rip your throat! Yo!
    Crimson and turpintine
Downloadin' love with Rake Yohnnie's mom

    And in this text:

    Perhaps I'm just strange
    But when I see turpintine
    I still get thirsty

But it could be misspelled in both offcourse...

The Compact OED also only has the word turpentine. Turpintine is most probably a misspelling.

By the way, who ever wrote that text is definately weird or a recovering drug-user.
    • Perhaps I'm just strange
    • But when I see turpintine
    • I still get thirsty

The lyric is definately refering to turpentine. Any oil painter should be able to tell you what the substance is and also probably have it in their studio. It is a rather toxic substance that is yellow to brown semifluid oleoresin exuded from the sapwood of pines, firs, and other conifers. When pure, it is a colorless, transparent, oily liquid with a penetrating odor and a characteristic taste. It is used for thinning artists oil paints and cleaning the brushes. Being an artist myself and having worked in an art supply store for quite a few years I am very familiar with the substance.
