Did you know that you can give Sir Sarles the ilithium(in order to finish the cleric quest) and then KILL him with no negative cosequences(except loosing some reputation points)?

Loosing some reputation points may be considered a negative consequence, especially if your reputation is already low enough.

Actually, you can do that without loosing any reputation points.
Its one of the oldest tricks too.

Cast protection from Evil on your team.
Then cast Gate in the room where Sir Sarles is standing.
Since you have no control over the gated creature, it is not considered your fault if it kills anyone.
And it cant target you either.
Once that cheap, snobby ass**** is dead, kill the monster too and walk out with the Illithium.

Is there an event in the game where you can use the rare ore for anything if you take it back from him?

It can upgrade a certain item in the game. I won't spoil it here but you can always ask.

I always use the ore then give the imitation to Sarles. That's good enough for him. He thinks otherwise, leaves and I bring the imitation to the temple, they like it. They give you your reward. Seems the right way to complete the quest, even if you are good.
