Every time I am being attacked by a mindflayer, I almost instantly die, because my intelligence is 3 (Hey, i'm a half-orc barbarian, i don't need to be intelligent, uuhh, accualy, I do need it)
I made a really good character, and set my charisma on 14, because I wanted to be the leader of my gang and he needs good charisma then. How was I supposed to know that you find a ring wich gives you 18 charisma .
Anyway, are there rings that give you more intelligence? I don't want to drink a potion to make it higher every time I see a mindflayer. In that part in the athkatla sewers, I had to reload my game everytime, because I got killed by those ugly monsters.
So, any help or advice you can give me is very welcome...

 

well i don't think there are any rings...

u'll just have to try some more adverse tactics against the flayers. I found a more interesting way to combat them was to huddle my fighters in the doorway with Chaotic Commands on them... and have the fighter with the highest intelligence stand at the front. Then open the door on them and they all crowd to get at the door. Start smacking away making sure your fighters each hack away at thesame Mid Flayer to take them down quickly. If there is an Ulitharid in the room cast spells and fire any missile weapons at it... coz it is an arse in Close Combat... as i found out several times. This usually works but it may take a couple of tries.

A more cheat way is to open the door... get your Mage with the Robe of Vecna to quickly let off a Cloudkill or Death Fog spell and shut the door again... (i do NOT endorse this method... only in dire straits!)

Position your group and walk forward with one person. When a mindlayer tries to charm you, activate the Greenstone Amulet, you got from the Elder Orb in de Beholder Lair.
When a mindflayer attacks, walk back and attack him with your group. With one charge of the amulet, you can't be charmed or whatever. The best to do is to let the group wait behind a corner. After the mindflayer casted a spell, he will attack, now walk back, behind the corner, and attack with the whole group.

 

I used both chaotic commands and the greenstone amulet. You can also use this saltwater you´ll find in the mindflayer dungeon in the underdark. It helps also quite well against Myko spore-attacks.

 

Interesting . . . I had trouble with these beasties somewhere before. Took a few attempts to get the tactics right and I can't remember what that was. My mage isn't close to getting to them yet but he has 18 INT ~ judging from the comments above this may help ?? I hope so !

How or what do the mindflayers kill people with ? I remember that I would lose control of a character next thing they'd be dead !
