I'm curious how everyone else decided to deal with the two factions from start to finish. Most of my characters went with Hadvar at the beginning simply because he's more honorable than Ralof. I don't blame him for my attempted execution. In fact, Hadvar is also the only character who attempts to speak out on your behalf. The comment was minor, but it was the best that he could have done given the situation. Ralof, on the other hand, does absolutely nothing to dissuade the Imperials from executing you along with the Stormcloaks. At the very least, something along lines of "I'm sorry you're going to be decapitated for the sake of my ideals" would have sufficed.
You also get to see Hadvar attempting to rescue innocents and keep you (the prisoner) safe instead of killing you outright in case you tried to escape - this would have been the standard course of action. Finally, when you decide to join him he first attempts to reason with the Stormcloaks in the Keep.
For the rest of the game though, my character remains neutral.

Originally I avoided joining a faction because I suspected that both sides have their share of war crimes (which turns out to be true). Ultimately though we learn that there is no real "right" side. You're forced to choose the lesser of two evils (or the bigger **ck, depending on your point of view), and in the end the Thalmor still gain the upper hand.

IMO they should add an alternatives to joining a faction - like at some point your character becomes so powerful and influential it's ridiculous how the game doesn't give you the option to conquer Skyrim on your own.

I sided with the Imperials as all my characters have always been big on the empire and seeing it as something good. The Stormcloaks just seemed to me to be opportunistic luck-seekers with no grasp of the bigger picture. Didn't stop me from later on assassinating the emperor though but he was weak anyway. My next toon is planned to be a chauvinistic nationalistic patriotic nord with a big sword and lots of armour and he will side with the Stormcloaks.

It still peeves me that you still can't build real political power for your character in the ES games. Been aiming for that since Morrowind but it just does not happen. Should have made me emperor or at least put me on the council in Oblivion and got dammit, I wanted to be emperor and wup Thalmor butt in Skyrim as well.
