My first character from BG is a fighter with 19s for Str, Dex, Con, and Char (gotta love those tomes and manuals!) and only 10 and 11 for Int and Wis.

When I import him, I can keep him as a straight fighter, or change him to a kit. (Unfortunately, changing him to a ranger or Paladin is not an option.)

    Any suggestions?

You should go for the Kensai, best thac0 most damage and most attacks, high AC is compesated with your priest, casting Bark skin, succes!

True but the berserker can also do the same amount of damage i find plus the fact that it can wear armor and bracers and use sheilds which the kensai cannot

I'd go for a berserker, and if you make him dual wield, the enrage bonus that hit & damage applies for both weapons.
And you will gain enough enrage/day later on.

you do have to give the ranged weapon ability, but again, there isn't that good bows(perhaps except manabow) in the game that can't be handled by thiefs.

Would it be worth it to dual class him to thief, since the Dex is so high?

Also, which makes a better dualed thief: Fighter, kensai or berserker?

I've never played one myslef, but apparently the best dual-class combo is the kensai/mage or kensai/theif. As you're intelligence is too low to dual to a mage, I'd suggest a kensai/thief.

Yes, figter/thief is a good offensive force, and he will be able to reach a highest level (correct me if im wrong)

PS so ye can select a kit for a pure class when importing from BG?

Kensai-thief is a great class, playing one myself I can say I love him.

Your char´s high dex also suggests to choose a missile weapon for the high-dex THACO bonus. 19 dex is too much for a kensai (one point wasted) for it doesn´t result in a better AC bonus.

However, even a plain fighter-thief is a cool class; though he has inferior melee fighting abilities, he can still use a ranged weapon (with grandmastery in a longbow for example). He can also get the elven chains and the shadow armor and the shadow dragon scale. A fighter-thief and a kensai-thief both have very interesting playing options.

When I started BG-2 I specialised my dc kensai-thief (fighter lvl-6/thief lvl-*) like that (and I was very satisfied with his punch):
    **** katanas
    **** daggers
    ** single weapon style

Ragusa: Why daggers? I had always thought of them as pretty useless, at least in BG 1 . . .

[IMG] Why not use a dagger? They have a sensationally low initiative, are ideal for backstabbing and some of them are great ranged weapons too .... and their 1d4 + X damage isn´t that silly when backstabbing.

The difference between backstabbing with a certain 1d10+3 katana (compared to a 1d4+3 dagger) is just about +6 damage; neglectable when backstabbing, despite the fact that the damage multiplier increases the difference further. It is just a minor difference for me to kill instantly with 55 damage or 85 :D

I actually used the daggers for backstabbing and for melee I switched over to my lovely C`Fury. For this char the daggers also provided the +4 weapon needed to hurt liches. :D Daggers are cool :D

Ragusa, I, as a magic user, completely agree with ye on this one! Dagger is a weapon of power, and 'tis the useful item for adventuring mages. And! 1d4 is not the apogee; Fire Tooth +3 has 2d4, like a damage of a bastard sword, and 'tis extremely useful, cos it does fire damage (goes through stoneskin, IIRC) and can be thrown.
Dagger rules the day! [Staff of magi grunts in the backpack] :)
