[IMG] I'm playing my first HOF game. I was able to save the bridge in chapter one. Then I moved on to the fortress. I did pretty well beating the first two sets of drums. The third one kept on beating me up. I eventually used improved invisibility on everyone and had my barbarian attack the drum and destroy it.

After he attacked the drum he lost his invisibility and everything under the sun was attacking him. Once the drum was destroyed I had him run away (hasted) and try to hide behind a wall of animate deads that were still fighting at the bridge. I would have thought that once he was far enough away his invisibility would have kicked in again, but it didn't as he kept on getting targeted. Then when I tried to get a cleric to heal him they weren't able to as he was invisible to my party, but not to the monsters.

Is this working correctly? Is there a way to turn the invisibility back on again? Should I have cast a dispel magic to somehow get rid of the invisibility so I could heal him?

I hope that battle isn't indictitive of what the rest of the game will be like as it took me at least ten tries to beat it without someone dying (although it was a lot of fun).

First point is: improved invisibility means, that one cannot see you, only some flickering if he tries to see it (he knows, that there is somebody invisible).

Second: if you outrun them, they should not see you. But as the "homing" strategy of monsters works as it works, there IS a bug in their "seeing". If you attack somebody with a thief and than the thief hides himself, monsters will "find" your party instead of seeking "who attacked them". I understand why this is so. Because HIT/RUN/HIDE tactics is overpowering. But it could be more subtle. Maybe, they could run around the place where the attack was made and don't return to their previous position (as in other games). But to "see" where the rest of the party is - that is too much.

Third - yes, cast dispel and heal. But be careful - dispel strips all magic effects from your character and other characters that are near (otilukes resilient sphere is an exception - I don't know why).

There are many flaws in IWDII. It's 3e implementation, small amount of role playing, very simple story line, ... But it is a great game, nice piece of software and it makes fun ...

Don't make it bad. Try to find a solution also in times when everything seems to be against you. Monsters, rules, implementation, ... It is the best - to find a solution and to be victorious against all odds.

    *giggles*

I find the 3rd drums fight to be the hardest fight in the whole game for my party, the Guardian fight been the second hardest.

Here is the ghetto tactic I used.

I send my barbarian and my warrior in line of sight and put my group near the exit, both hasted.

My warrior charge first! He gain a hell **** of mobs on his sorry arse. Warrior run away in circles with most mobs on his arse.

Barbarian destroy the drums then run for the group.

Warrior run for the group, then you click to leave the zone. You could also kill whatever is on barbarian while warrior is running, but you need to keep a close watch on warrior, he must not be cornered.

If you choose to leave the zone, you come back and they are scattered a little everywhere on the maps, this change the fight from the hardest to the easiest of the game.

Also: You don't need to destroy the drums, it is the orc shaman that beat on the drums, you can just kill the shaman. This is usually better, as the shaman don't attack you, have less HPs then the drums and...when you kill the drums, you have a shaman to kill, when you kill the shaman, well, the drums don't need to be destroyed that fast, it won't harm you much. For exemple, while waiting for the mobs to come close to warrior, you could give a few hits on the shaman, the barbarian job is just easier after.

I'm playing my first HoF game too (solo Sorcerer), and I've not quite got to the drums yet. However, I'm thinking, the nice axe I bought that slays kegs and constructs and wooden beams all in one hit should do the same for the drums...

Run in, one hit, no more drums.

Then the real fun starts. When in troube, Mass Dominate I say. works a treat. Take a step back and let the baddies kill each other before sending in an Apolyptic Boneguard or some such to clean up. Now that's a beauty, thank you.

if u have spell penetration 2 and greater spell focus: transmutation (is that what school mass dominate is?) does it make the spell nearly impossible to beat?

the mass dominate school is enchantment and yes it will get bonus from both feats. however, i do not like the spell as i see no reason to charm someone i want to kill anyway. so you could use spell penetration 2, greater focus necromancy and wail of a banshee as well.

Unfortunately I hadn't planned ahead for the level 9 spells, so I don't think I've got the greater spellfocus in either of those, which means about 1/2 saves are made against the mass dominate at the moment. Big baddies more so than minnions. Still I average about 150-180 with delayed blast fireballs though, ~150 for horrid wilting and ~100 for skulltrap. Mad when it takes 5 skulltraps to kill a normal troll though.

As far as using MD goes, it's more fun than watching apocalyptic boneguards and festering drowned dead beating everything to a pulp. I don't see it as "charming" I see it as a means to an end, making evil kill evil etc, etc. (That was the justification I used to the Paladin side of my sorcerer at least [2 levels])

BTW the enhanced kegsplitter didn't work on the drums, oh well. Improved invisibilty is great when soloing though, coz at least it lets you target yourself, so the area was still a breeze.
