I just saw the excellent report by Greg Palast of the BBC, who interviewed senior US figures who were involved in managing post-war Iraq.

Originally, the report said, the US - that is State Department - planned for simply overthrowing Saddam with a baathist general and that's it. Business was expected to go on again, end of story (my preferred choice too, btw)

After 9/11 the neocons went rabid and decided that they would be happy with nothing less but crushing OPEC. So therefor Saddam had to go, the socialist baathist system had to go to have a free lane to a new, fully privatised Iraq, an Iraq especially with privatised Iraqi oil.
As we all know, "Operation Rose Petal" didn't quite work out as planned.

And their ambitious plan, too, was stopped dead in the tracks by the insurgency: American big oil.
    Enjoy :)
