Is character class based on character or training?

Just curious on how D&D players view their PCs. Like, when you say a character is a rogue, do you mean he is a rogue based on his character (scheming, cunning, resourceful, whatever), or his training (lockpicking, trap disarming)?

Or how bout a cleric. Is the PC a cleric because of his pious nature, or because he grew up in a temple?

And a fighter. A cowardly trained swordsman wouldnt make much of a fighter, but even a weak guy in certain circumstances can rise above the occasion.

Hope I'm making sense. I guess I'll sum it up by asking, would you call someone trained in arts of war, but who is scheming, cunning etc typical rogue descriptions, a fighter or a rogue?

    Yes.

It is a combination of all of the above(at least for me).

I think at first I start with the character style, but at later levels switch to training style, as you can then use training without the trap blowinng up in your face and your PC has got his character sorted out.
