Just a clever way to avoid military service but unfortunately the conscription officers would laugh at my face and throw me to the worst unit, if I had tried to use an excuse like this when I had to join the army.

Lol is all I can say. Probably 1-5% of those 9% are really unable to do the military service. People do just anything to avoid the army in here. Some even go as far as faking insanity in order to avoid the compulsory military service.

Not exactly "anything", but you can't blame those guys for baiting the sarge by hook and line. Can't believe they actually got free of the service. :D

I would had just taken a transfer to somewhere else. ;)

You guys HAVE to go to the army at a certain age for a certain length of time right? I wish they would do that in the UK and get all the little ****heads off the streets.

Well having a ****head on the streets is better than sharing a bunk with one, woulden't you agree? :D

I think the army is good, if you're in bad shape it's quite certain that in the army they'll fix it and after that it's just up to you to keep up the good shape. It also teaches numerous practical things those "spoiled brats" who haven't been forced to do anything at home.

I hate the idea of conscription, and would vehemently oppose it if it were put forward in the UK.

I cannot agree with forcing people to do something like that, especially if it involves a tour of duty around dangerous areas.

I agree that a certain additional level of discipline would be useful for some of the "spoiled brats", but I don't think this is the way to do it. It's probably better to figure out why they're that way and cure the root problem than attempt to force them into a regulation mould once they've become "brats".

Besides, the army would force me to cut my hair! Crew cuts do absolutely nothing for me...

Those "addicts" probably also have a sever alergy to exercise, disipline, and socialization. They shouldn't be excused for their addiction, the army probably is a good treatment to cure them.

I don't know what you have been told about conscription but it's not in any way dangerous unless some psycho happens to be with you on the shooting range (but then again you might meet that psycho anywhere else too). The Finnish army makes damn sure that no one gets physically hurt or killed during their service. If that would happen the officer in charge would face charges and the entire military system would face a lot of trouble. The military service in here is a cultural thing too and really the backbone of our defencive army, Finland has not sent anyone to war by force since the Continuation War (sp?) and all the peacekeepers we have in Kosovo and Afganistan are voulenteers.

One can avoid military service by choosing civilian service which is longer than military service but doesen't involve shooting (those who choose civilian service often help in schools or hospitals) or hopping in the forest.

Hehe, does this story have anything to do with that Finland is the nation with most internet connection per 1000 citizens?

Not hard though, when there only is Morgoroth, Wirhe, Jarri Kurri, and their president inhabiting the country. :D

I don't agree with this but propably this is due to the differences between greek and finnish army. I can remember many incidents, which had the death of conscripts or professionals as a result. The two most recent had as a result the death of 7 soldiers. The first one took place in a training camp, when the driver of a BNP-1 lost the control of his vehicle and hit a group of officers killing two of them. The second happened in an outpost when some conscripts tried to place the iron pole of the flag back to its base and the damn thing touched the electricity wires resulting the death of 5 of them. As far as the psycho is concerned, certainly you can meet a psycho everywhere but if you meet him in the army, he'll be armed. During my service I've met many guys, who shouldn't be allowed to have a gun. I remember one who shot his leg while he was in guard duty just few seconds after the patrol passed from his post.

I think conscription is a great idea. Sure as hell sorts out the population and teaches them some valuable skills.

The problem is they've recieved no discipline as children because their parents didn't recieve the same. Shove 'em in the army and you've fixed the problem immediately and for future generations. Not to mention you'll have a far more able work force.

Conscription doesn't teach you anything usefull. You learn some basic military skills but after the fourth month the training is so repetative and you are bored as hell and after a year from the end of your service you remember nothing. The only thing that conscription teaches is how to avoid hard work and let someone else do it. As for the matter of behaviour and discipline, sorry mate, but the army doesn't do the things you describe. The army doesn't turn you in to a man and surely it doesn't turn an ******* in to a nice guy and the opposite.

It's six months for the basic training, but some choose to have some extra-training of that boredom: one, full year. :D

(Btw, never EVER go there before winter... Nothing like waking up 0600 to clean the barrack entrance from piles of snow, in crackling 30^C temperature.)

Nothing really can be done about that, since conscription has too firm support, but the lenght of civil service has been in discussion every now and then. It is twice as long (1y) which is a bit unfair.

This thread is soon bound to a one way ticket to the Alley. :D

Agreed conscription can't change the nature of a man, but it most certianly can teatch discipline and independence. Persoanlly I think that finnish men need the army in order to become fully independent and need a place where you get serious consequences for your mistakes. It also offers the possibility to get in shape through the excercise programs they have there. I really can't see too much negative things in Finnish conscription and I am a firm supporter of it.

As for the deaths in the army. There was one mistake a few years ago when an younger officer had couple of his men killed by stationing them on artillery testing ground. Of course this was a mistake and while things like this should not happen they can never be fully prevented.

It is as it should be. The main point is that everybody should do their military service but if you have some philisophy which prevents you to touch guns or something like that you have the possibility to serve the state in other ways. The sad truth is that if the civil service was as short as the military service most would pick it instead because it's quite a lot easier. If you do not want to do your military service or civil service you end up in prison for a couple of months, which is a stupid choise and gets you a criminal record.

Edit: This discussion reminded me about the guy who refused to do military service or sivil service and went tu Brussels to cry about the violation of his human rights. Geez, the military service is a civil responsibility similar to paying taxes, if you refuse to pay taxes you go to jail and if you refuse to do military service you go to jail. Quite a simple logic I think.
