    IIRC, Yahoo is an ISP, so why couldn't you use them?

    [IMG] Or buy a Pop3 email account. I bought mine for $3.00 and it's great.

    Outlook Express would probably work if you have it.

    Yahoo is not an ISP. An ISP is your Internet service provider, i.e. the people you call (if you are on dial-up) to establish an Internet connection. (Or are always connected to if you have broadband.)

    Real ISPs will practically always issue you an e-mail with their domain when you sign up. So for example if your ISP was ReallyGreatISP (made up), your e-mail would be dungeon_master@reallygreatisp.com.

    Of course, the problem you can encounter here is if your ISP is also a freebie one (i.e. you can just call the access number without an username/password because they bill your phone bill.) In such a cause you should look up on the website of this ISP if they will issue you a real e-mail account. They usually do if you sign up.

    In the worst case you can do as Gopher suggested and simply buy a real pop3 mail account somewhere.

    Some forums ban all freebie mail accounts from being used at registration because spammers and similar net trash usually use them, and they just go from one throwaway account to another once they're banned, because there are so many free ones around. And because anyone using such a mail is practically untraceable (since they can sign up with all false info), whereas real mail accounts with an ISP can be traced to the source, so the abuser can actually be identified if necessary.

    @Tal

    I've been offered dial-up service from Yahoo. Whether they still do the ISP aspect or not, I don't know, but I do know that at one time they were an ISP.

    Yahoo never was an ISP per se. Didn't start as such and that's not its focus now either. Buried pretty deep on their site, I found they actually do offer Internet access as well. But it's more of a bonus activity than anything else. They've teamed up with SBC to offer it, and the service is called "SBC Yahoo!". So SBC is the ISP here, using Yahoo's name and certain services, and that's it.
