Using the search feature I couldn't find this topic already on these boards, so I'm starting a new thread.

This topic relates the druid spell, Summon Nature's Ally, particularly the higher level versions of it. The issue that I'm having is, it seems like whenever I cast this spell and 1 or more of the summoned creatures are some form of elemental, they are hostile to my party. Any natural animal, however, is friendly.

Does anyone have a good explanation of this might be? I have toyed with the idea of this being a charisma check that my druid is failing (his charisma is 10), but I can't find anything in the manual or in game descriptions that indicate charisma is a factor for this spell. I also peeked into the spell description of this spell line in the 3ED PHB and I can't find a tie to charisma nor a mention that summoned creatures will ever be hostile to the caster.

Has anyone else encountered this before? Is there anything that I can do to make this spell consistently work for me, rather than against me?

It has to be this way.

Animals can be controlled. But everything that comes from another plane and is big, can't be controlled. Elementals are from another Plane.

You need protection versus evil 3.5m radius.

This is the way it is meant to be. Direct control of creatures of another plane is not possible. With protection versus evil, you can protect your party and the creatures will attack your foes.

Enemies have the same rules. If you dispell their protection versus evil, their own planar summons will attack them.

In the manual, you have to look under other summon-spells, like "GATE". There's the explanation.

[IMG] Thanks Yago. I can deal with that, although it would have been nice if a disclaimer had been placed on this spell somewhere in the description. Warning: this spell could be hazardous to your health!!

At least in D&D, if I remember correctly, you have the option to choose what gets summoned with this spell.

Yago has no clue, but starts speculating:

    1. 2nd edition versus 3rd edition ?
    2. Bioware houserules versus Interplay houserules ?
    3. Decision based on game balance: Make ID2 a little bit harder, because controllable elements would be overpowered?
    4. Balance in BG2: Not controlable Elements would be underpowered ?

It was simply a balance issue in IWD2, nothing more. BIS explained that on their boards back then.
