It appears that Dean is toast

His $40 million war chest has been spent (in fact he's in debt by millions now), the visionary campaign manager who made him has quit (or, was fired - no one is really sure), he's had poor showings in the first two primaries, he's the laughingstock of the country, and his support is evaporating.

His passion is inspiring, and his policies are good ones. But - and I hate to say it, because I do like the guy - methinks Howard Dean is screwed. :(

What happened? Any thoughts on his demise? I don't put too much stock in the "Scream Heard 'Round the World" crap, but who knows...maybe it was the proverbial camel-crippling straw.

I don't really know for sure, but it may be that he is too liberal to be supported by the moderates and/or independents, which he probably needs to win.

I am not entirely sure why, but methinks you're right.

As a supporter of Dean - one of "Howard's Howitzers" or "Deaniacs" - as his supporters are called at times, my feeling is that Kerry beat him. Kerry also had help from the other Dems, but I think that the rank-and-file Dems fell-in behind the party leadership and then Kerry just flat out did a better job than Dean. Dean is not really that much of a liberal; maybe compared to Shrub, but really he is kind of an old-style, New Deal, type Democrat.

But that is symptomatic of the times - when a politician is for the common, working class man, he is suddenly a liberal. What nonsense, since a liberal is really concerned with the poor and the disadvantaged, the forgotten ones in the emerging political dialogue of 2004. Edwards is talking it also, as Dean is, that it is "work" not wealth that should be rewarded. This goes straight to the heart of the middle-class and is hardly liberalism in the true sense, but working class, middle class idealism.

The middle class in America is not an economic one, but one of shared values, which a majority of Americans believe they have in common. IMO, when they respond that they are middle class, they don't mean how much money they have, but their values instead. That is where the Dems are speaking as a result of Howard Dean. Before Howard Dean I agreed with Ralph Nader that there was little difference between the Republicans and the Democrats. Dean has forced the Dems to be more like dems, instead of the party of the greed mongers. They are better for it.

Here's a good quote by Eric Alterman, a guy who really is a liberal, commenting on Dean:

I'm not sure what to think about Dean's demise. As he's probably even more a hawk on Israel than George Bush Jr. I'm not really sorry about it.

I'm happy with every pres who for a change will make a responsible foreign and fiscal policy, and atm that can only be a Democrat.

Ragusa - I don't know where you get your info, but Dean is generally considered to be the least pro-Israel of the lot. It put a lot of Jewish Democrats (and, according to stereotype, most American Jews vote Democrat) in an awkward position. While they may like Dean, they also like Israel.

Latest polls taken on Wednesday/Thursday on the 7 primaries on Tuesday of next week indicate the following:

    Missouri: Kerry
    South Carolina: Kerry/Edwards (statistically tied)
    Arizona: Kerry
Delaware: Liebermann (to me, that's shocking)
    Oklahoma: Clark
    New Mexico: Dean

I couldn't find any information on the 7th state - either what the polls said or what the 7th state even was. Suffice it to say, that anyone who is going to continue in the nomination process has to win at least one of those states. In Oklahoma, Missouri, Delaware, Arizona, and South Carolina, Dean is running no better than 3rd. Not good times for the Deaniacs.
