In honor of Halloween, I made my GF watch some scary movies with me (scared girlfriend = snuggle time. Awww yeeeah  ). So I rented two flicks that I've been wanting to see for a while. "The Ring" and "28 Days Later."

The Ring was really good. Premise: A mysterious video tape is rumored to kill whomever watches it after exactly 7 days. A reporter, after unwittingly watching it herself, becomes obsessed with solving the mystery. Super creepy visuals and feel, and overall I really liked it despite a few gaps in the story that didn't make much sense. But oh well - overall, great flick. Like all creepy movies, watch it in the dark.

Now on to one of the best sci-fi/horror movies I've seen in years: 28 Days Later. Think "Night of the Living Dead" on crack, speed AND steroids. Premise: A London man wakes up in a hospital bed and finds the place completely derserted. Walking outside he sees the wreckage of a massive evacuation, and comes to find out that a highly communicable virus, known as "the Rage," has spread. Within 10-20 seconds of contact, the "infected" become mindless, raging zombies who kill anything in sight. The man and a handful of survivors fight to stay alive, antics ensue, blood and guts and suspense...oh my! Watch it in the dark - you may soil your pantaloons.

So...anything good you've seen lately, scary or otherwise? Feel free to comment on any movie posted here, including mine.

I agree with you about "28 Days Later". Classic horror elements, modern action sequences and the best kick-but heroin since Ripley.

Didn't really care much for "The Ring". I'm sick of these so-called horror movies that have no real horror in them, sort of like all the stuff by M. Night Sham'man. Just not scary, a little creepy at best, and no surprise to anyone...did anyone really not think that Bruce Willis was dead?

H.S. - I know what you mean about horror films not being scary. It's like Aliens - I mean, what's so scary about some kid named Elliot befriending a cute little guy from outer space?

(Hey, if you can get mixed up between The Ring and The Sixth Sense, I can do the same with Aliens and E.T. :p Unless of course the Bruce Willis part was referring to the Sham'man part of your post)

Anyway, the only movie I've seen recently is Bend It Like Bekham. Not at all a horror movie, more like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, with a soccer twist. Not a bad movie, though.

I saw School of Rock a week or so ago. I thought it was pretty good just because of Jack Black. They picked the perfect actor for that because he could play his real self. He is a loser rocker and it's great.

No, in my usual manner of schizophenic posting, I jumped from "The Ring" to M. Night Sham'man (the ring wasn't his movie) and the usual favorite among his movies, "the Sixth Sense". There was a logical procession there, just only logical to me. :D

Speaking of Aliens, has anyone seen the re-released original sci-fi-horror great "Alien"? Not much for new scenes, most of what was included on the recent dvd, but to see that in the theater, with the revamped special effects, I have a renewed appreciation for that work. If you can catch it while its on the big screen, I heartily reccomend it.

Saw Memento a few weeks ago and thought it was a really good albeit a confusing story. Made me think of Planescape:Torment though and how it in fact really resembles it.

Recommended to any who like great plot movies.

I just made a female friend of mine watch Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness and Bad Taste. I have never seen anyone look so funny before. Of good movies I can easily recommend Kill Bill. But one movie I would really like to see is good old "the Labyrinth". It must have been atleast a decade since last i saw it.

The last film, that I watched, was the "The brave of Samothrace", a comedy about the "adventures" of a unit of the greek army in the island of Samothrace during the events of the summer of 1974. It was good and it reminded me lot of things from my military service.

Now, I want to watch again "Cross of iron" by Sam Peckinpah with James Coburn in the main role. The movie takes place in the Eastern front during 1943 and it's the best WW2 movie I have ever seen.
"If you want the Iron Cross captain, follow me in the battlefield where the Iron Cross grows."

"The Ring" was good, but the original Japanese "Ring" was better by far - not horror, more thriller. And as I said elsewhere a few mintues ago, last night I sat through all 3 Matrix films at the local cinema - well worth the $18.50 it cost me but not IMO what the hype cracked it up to be.

Also recently, I finally saw Barbarella (good, camp fun), The Score (great ending) and Training Day (Denzel certainly deserved his Oscar for that.

I agree about Training Day. Denzel is so good, you miss how good Ethan Hawke is...watch again and you'll see what I mean.

Mentioned this in another thread, but just saw Matrix Revolutions and I was almost insulted. This movie would be outright bad if it were not for a few action scenes that served to wake me up. So much for part 3's...have to wait for ROTK for a fitting conclusion.

Matrix Rev...3 thumbs down (pretty good, considering I only have 2!)

    favourite movies ->
    fight club
    requiem for a dream
    american psycho
    aliens

have yet to see a great recent horror flick
the original exorcist (shot in black and white) was very good
i did think the ring was pretty good actually, not terrifying, but did enough
28 days later could've been scarier - perhaps less given away about what had happened (unknown = fear)

I love the scene in "Fight Club" were Brad Pitt just gets the crap beat out of him because he won't back down to the mob guy. Finally the mob guy realizes that there's no way he can hurt this nut, and leaves defeated. Brilliant. The cinematography in that movie was great, too.

maybe we could include not only our favorite movies, but our favorite parts. There's lots of movies that have sucked, but had one really great scene.

I agree. The Japanese version was a lot better. Maybe there are people who think that movie wasn't scary, but personally, I didn't watch TV for quite a while after seing that film.
The remake was a disappointment. They added a few details here and there which were completely unnecessary, and this killed the suspense.

Saw another film called "The Eye" the other day. Kind of creepy, but in a good way... :)

[IMG] Has anyone here seen "Ran?" It's a japanese Kurosawa flick based on Shakespeare's "King Lear." I'd like to hear reviews about it.

I saw it when it first came out (about 20 years ago, I think). I'm not a big Shakespeare fan, so I missed the King Lear connection. Being so long ago, I don't remember specifics, but I recall being impressed with the acting and cinematography. You definitely want to see it on a larger screen TV.

I saw Lilja 4-ever yesterday. Very confronting film, but a good one.

On 28 days later: I liked it, but I didn't think it was very scary.

Just found Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in the video shop. Now thats a funny movie! (Well, thats how I remember it, been about a decade since last time I saw it.)

Talking good movies, I would like to get my hands on the ferman movie "Stalingrad". I saw it some years ago, and in my oppinion, historical movies has to have the actors speak to right languages. Maybe thats why I like Das Boot....

Ahh, I saw Evil Dead and From dusk till dawn over the weekend. Both are tops flicks. Army of Darkness is much better though.

Friend of mine got grounded and she was going through a list of movies she was going to watch. I felt a moment of elation when she said "robin hood ala Walt Disney". Ooo Dah Lalley!

'Angela's Ashes' was the best film I ever saw. 'The sixth sense' and 'The Bone collector' were the scariest! also and episode of the x files where there was a cursed doll. Scary
