I'm just getting back into BG/IWD after a few years away and I was wondering if anyone had any recommended resources for lore or any suggestions for essential reading material? Basically, what should I know about "the world" before I start making characters, chugging pots and killing goblins? Any recommendations would be welcome. (Also, as an aside, the soundtrack to this game is awesome)

Nothing. You can get into slaughtering without any background whatsoever.

    Although reading the manual helps.

There's no essential reading, but the Baldur's Gate series is a very loose sequel to the Avatar trilogy of novels. The Avatar trilogy deals with the Time of Troubles when the gods walked as mortals, and Bhaal is a minor character in the trilogy. You definitely do not need to read this trilogy to understand Baldur's Gate, but it does add to the lore.

For Icewind Dale (the game) it does have some references to the Icewind Dale trilogy of novels. The game does take place many years before the novels, and its not necessary reading either. If you like Drizzt though, you might like the novels since Drizzt is the main character.
